what do you think of them vs normal parrelel bar dips and why?
The reason I’m thinking of doing them is because one of my aims is to be able to do muscle ups and I think straight bar dips will have better carry over.
One downside I can see is that they have a much smaller range of motion but I don’t know if there is any others, like excess pressure on joints etc…
I don’t do them, or much gymnastic-y bodyweight training, but they seem to be basically an extreme decline bench press, for lack of a better analogy. I’d treat them like any other bodyweight dip variation and pay attention to how your wrists, elbows, and shoulders feel within the ROM.
You might want to look into recent T-Nation contributor Al Kavadlo’s work. He might have the kind of info you’re looking for.
i still cant do muscle ups because ive been gaining weight steadily for a while, but i never found straight bar dips very helpful. i think the single best exercise to work on is sternum pullups. id try to progressively increase the explosiveness and height of my pullups until i could get the bar down to about the top of my gut. by that time muscle ups should be possible. i think theres a very good in depth ebook on the subject of muscle ups. ill see if i can find it for you.
its a bit pricey but if i had the money to invest i’d get it. however if you dont wanna put down the money i dont blame you(plus idk if they ship outside of the U.S.)
besides i think theres plenty of free info out there to help you get your first muscle up without training or special instruction.
Hey, thanks GreatAjax, I looked elastic steel up and it looks great but I can’t afford that lol but gymnasticbodies is an excellent resource.
Just tried some sternum pullups and I think Ive figured out what I have been doing wrong. Instead of pulling myself up behind the bar and then puling myself in when I get up there, I’ve been trying to do a normal pullup and transition.
I reckon a couple of week of sternum pull ups and I’ll get my first muslce up (I can only pull to my mid chest at the moment)
Are you still trying to get a muscle up or are you focusing on other movements at the minute?
theyve been one of my goals for a long time. i havent really been working on them though because ive been focused on putting on mass. it can extrememely frustrating to work on improvng a bodyweight movement when your bodyweight is increasing. right now im just working on reegular pullups. im going to start working on front levers again soon.
also you should be patient. if you dont get your first muscle up in the timeframe you estimated, dont be discouraged. just keep it up.
i just learned how to do one muscle up and i have found it much easier if you start from the upright position on the bar instead of just powering yourself up.

Do you mean start at the top, drop down, then come back up? I dont get it
