StormTheBeach: How Do You Train?

I think I have seen in past posts that you do Westside influenced type training. Do you have any tips for training WS style / things you think a lot of people do not understand about this method / things you wish you knew earlier etc…

Thanks for your help, you are one strong dude!

Yea youre right, that stuff only works for guys on steriods with multi ply gear.

Hey mike. I have a friend’s son coming to me for some advice on lifting.(hes about 23). Hes lifted for 3-4yrs(not including high school) but still needs to bring up some mass as well as strength. But hes drifting toward powerlifting. I first thought WSB may be a good start but I realize that you arent to fond of it. You have any suggestions? thanks for your time man[/quote]

I was being very sarcastic when I said that. I dont think there is a a better methodology for training than westside. Lift heavy weights and work the hell out of your weaknesses. Thats about it. If he is a beginner in powerlifting, I would strongly suggest picking up the 5/3/1 manual. A big problem with beginners and westside training is that they have no idea how to work to a max or what exercises are really developing their weaknesses. Understanding a “max for that day” was probably the hardest thing for me to understand. But anyway, the best way to learn is to lift with guys who do it already. If he lifts alone, tell him to give 5/3/1 a shot for a few months.

I dont know if this is the best advice but it makes the most sense to me.

Yea, as far as tips: dont go heavy on speed days, never fail on assistance work, only use exercises that actually do something for you (not just because someone else strong says they do them… this is how I broke my back) and work your ass off.

Most people, who talk shit about this style of training, dont seem to understand the basic principals behind it. Developing weaknesses is priority. Bringing up your weakest muscle groups so that they are at the level of your strongest. This is achieved through assistance work and also picking the correct max effort exercises. Working with max weights increases your intra/intermuscular coordination. Which means you move more efficiently. You cant get the same effect out of lighter weights for more reps. If you are doing this correctly, how could it not work? People see westside and think, “well thats just bands and chains” or “good mornings are bad for your back.” These people are fucking stupid and weak. Two things that should be wiped off this planet.

I am no expert though, I’ve never been to westside, and I am not going to pretend like I have. I think I do have a pretty good understanding of the system that has come from countless hours of trial and error with myself and the people I train/train with.

As far as things I wish I knew earlier, nothing. If I new everything I wouldnt have been able to try out all the different ideas I have had. Also, if I knew everything, I wouldnt have messed up my training and my body so many times. Being in pain and miserable is a pretty good learning experience. Probably not the answer you were looking for but its true. haha.

Sorry I missed understood you. Its hard to read sarcasm online. Well I looked at it the same way you did so Im glad you agree. Thanks for your advice. Ill probably have him train with me to give him an idea and to watch his form and how he trains

A look into my living hell of a gym.

This one’s called “Flippy”

Suits and bands and a bunch of other stuff.

Man I would take your gym over my super sized commercial gym any day. Luckily soon Ill be moving back to another town that has an actual “lifting” and “training” gym

I honest to God think enviroment is more important than a good program. If your in a gym with rusted weights, chalk mess all over the place, clumps of bloody hair on the power bar, a stereo blasting loud shitty metal music, and a bunch of guys who not only want to get better, but want you to get better as well, you will get stronger. Its when you go to the local fitness center and some girl is checking facebook on her laptop on the stepper or some guy is texting, while grunting, on the leg extention machine (I saw this not too long ago) that your weights go nowhere.

Dont even go back to that place, just wait to move. In the meantime, do push ups in your house. You’ll probably get 10 times stronger that way.

Hey, I’m new to Powerlifting and want to improve on all my lifts especially my Deadlift. I’m getting serious about it now, starting 5/3/1 next week. Right now my max is 415 and I want to pull 567 (“elite” in 198 weight class, Ripp’s chart), any suggestions?

Do 5/3/1 exactly how its written and work your ass off. If your form is decent, you’ll be pulling 567 a lot sooner than you think.

How important have you found abdominal work to be and what are your preferred exercises for abs?

Excellent posts STB, I have to say I recently had great success following the korte program, about as basic as it gets!

Would definitely recommend that for beginners, moving along to something similar but working on my weaknesses now too! Thanks for all the info.

I actually saw somebody doing “lemonsqueezers” on a low row machine while texting.

StB, is there any reason you take Kre-akalyn instead of creatine? Have you found it better or had bad experiences with creatine?
