Stone Throws and Park Rangers

Last Friday, I was out back throwing my keg, and beating up a big tire with a 10lb sledge. My new neighbor came out because he could hear me over his TV. He thought my cheese slid off my cracker or something. I told him I was working out, and he looked at me with a blank expression, then turned around and walked back into his house without saying a word.

As soon as I get home tonight, I’ll have me something to eat, then I’ll be out back with my logs, keg, and sledge having a good old time.

I can only imagine what they’ll think when I bring a tractor tire home in a couple weeks.

I watched the anime BERSERK and got the idea of swinging something heavy.

I couldn’t make a sword so I welded a 16lb sledge head to another 16lb head. I went to the park and they had two big fallen trees.

I would beat the piss out of those trees. One was higher than the other. I was in a frenzy one time beating the fuck out of one those trees and I stopped and a ranger was behind me. I told him I was just exercising and he said if I was trying to put it in the ground I was going to need a bigger hammer or stand the tree up.

I took his advice on the first part. The hammer handle fell out of the head so I had to retire it. I was farted around on the net and typed in heavy sledge and came upon torque athletic. Every hair on me stood up when I saw they had a 50lb war hammer. I bought it immediatley. Went back to the park and they told me to stop so I did.

I brought a big tree log to my casa and started whackin on that. After a month my neighbors called the cops and I had to stop. It wasn’t the noise it was the mucho vibration. I never wanted to do any other exercise ever besides this one. I never tested my back strength but from the top of my ass to the top of my head I have never felt stronger.

When I find a suitable environment you bet your ass I’ll be back at it every other day. And if anyone tries it I kept both hands toward the end and had my feet spaced evenly apart one in front of theother working one side first.

Peter, I love it, im still trying to figure out what exactly im gonna be doing tomorrow, but right now ive got the stone throws, heavy stone carries, and i think im gonna try some kind of walks with a loaded barbell over my head, kind of inspired by the DBell figure eights that Waterburys has included in some of his routines, but im just gonna walk for distance with the Barbell held overhead.

I would love to add in some kind of Sledgehammer work as well, just gotta work out the details.

A mate of mine has a nice big yard where he lives, so a couple of us are going to gather some gear together and make a strongman type circut.

I can’t weight, it will mix up training a bit and should be good fun.

those are all awesome stories and really make me want to do that right now. i live near DC, so it is high traffic area.

there is this little patch of land at an intersection that i do my keg throws and sled pulls at. i love the looks i get as im hurdling the keg over myself. i, in turn, watch the people watching me while i rest. they must think it weird for some dude to be standing in a field with a rope tied around him and a tire chilllin with some weight in it.

this really makes me want to go out now… fuck this broken hand! (im on a strict diet too so that makes it so i cant do sled work) enjoy!

Well, there is this blue frat and this green frat. Each of the frats have rocks in front of them, the blue frat has small blue rocks and the green frat has really big green rocks, some that I can’t move.

For some reason whenever I deadlift heavy 500+ I tend to get in a rowdy mood and move a big green rock in front of the blue frat and I might throw a blue rock in front of the green frat on my way back from the gym.

I have found out that they really don’t like it when I put the big green rock on the blue frat’s picnic table or on their front steps. But, the best part is that none of the frat members can pick up the rock so they have to roll it back or suffer the indignity of having a green rock in front of their blue frat. For some reason I find this amusing and derive enjoyment from it.

Needless to say the frat has stopped moving the rock back. It has kind of ruined my fun.

What do you expect, I am a powerlifter and training for some strongman and they were nice enough to grace me with some big rocks.

And I still find the green rocks in front of the blue frat amusing.

This thread has definitely made me laugh.

When you guys are training this way, is there a method to the madness.

When you say stone throws, is there a specific “form” you use or are you just chucking this stuff around anyway you can? Are you measuring distances?

I picture the stone coming off the shoulder, pushed mostly with one hand.

Same with the keg throws and stuff?

How about the log work. Are you just carrying heavy shit around? Tossing it end over end?

Clue me in please.

I live in the sticks and have a lot of material to work with and no neighbors.

My wife already thinks I’m nuts so I won’t be bothering anyone.

Ahh man I just realized something…

3 blocks from my house is Large Park with a large football field, a small baseball field and dirt track around the perimetry of the whole thing. BUT the good thing is that next to it is a place where they sell FIRE WOOD!!

Once I get my next paycheck I’ll by some of them heavy timbers (& smaller ones too). And start tossing them and running after them.

Should be fun…

BTW what kind of gloves do you guys recommend???

With the stone throws, i like to switch it up, sometimes i take the smaller rocks and throw them much like you described, kind of like shotputting them.

With the larger ones, i start with both hands under them, and kind of throw like you would a chest pass during basketball.

And i usually just choose a distance, and ive got to throw it till i get there.

With my stone carries, i find the largest rock i can get to my chest, and i have to carry it a certain distance, and the goal is to be able to get it that distance, while stopping a few times as possible, and then the next session i wanna make it that distance or farther while putting the stone down less.

I dont use gloves for anything, I usually just chalk up, or sometimes i literally just rub some dirt on my hands.

its worked so far, havent tore a callus yet.

I am more worried about wood splinters, thats why I aked.

Sweet, sounds like fun.

This thread has inspired me to expand my training from the basement to the back yard.

Luckily I have a bunch of big rocks on our property that need to be moved anyway.

Also, just built a log home and have left over material.

Heat with a wood stove so I have lots of splitting and cutting to do anyway.

Heck, I need to get you guys over to my house and get some work done. I’ll supply the beer (or your choice of post workout drink) and won’t even charge you a gym membership.

I’m only about 8 months into this weight training game but I’m hooked.

In a year or two I’d love to try out a Highland Game or Strong Man comp.

Thanks for the advice

Was splitting some wood the other night, and i started to get senimental about those stone workouts, ive moved so its no longer an option, but i have a much larger yard now, think i might need to go pick up some sandbags.

Any new GPP stories out there ?
