Stone Lifting Gear

Curious what he covers his forearms with. I’m guessing it’s to help with the tacky not being directly on his skin?

Those look like spartan sleeves on top of athletic tape.

It’s not about the tacky being on the skin (that comes off easily with baby oil), it’s about protecting all the skin on your forearms from being scrapped off by the stone like a big round cheesegrater. Only time I ever did stones was without any sort of padding, and I still have the scars on my forearms, haha.

All you need is your forearms and tacky but I love stone rash

I don’t use tape or sleeves. The caveat of strongman is that it hurts really bad. Can’t be a wuss here!

This

Shaw actually has his own brand of stone sleeves. I’m not familiar with them, but I would assume he’s using his. I’m comfortable with being the sissy here. I actually use athletic tape on my forearms. I don’t notice any less grip on the stone and don’t have to go to work the next day with fish scale scars on my arm. For what it’s worth, I loaded a 405 stone at 235 pound body weight just two weekends ago.

Hmm i might just shave my inner forearms and slap on tacky. I don’t mind my forearms getting scratched up, it was just getting rid of the tacky afterwards is a bitch.

There’s more to it then clean up lol. Tacky is extremely adhesive, and when it’s put on your forearms and a stone, it doesn’t want to come off…

It’s going to cause some serious contusions followed by road rash-esque cuts. It’s a pretty strident pain tbh. Spider tack light really is a good first tacky to buy if you really do want to try bare skin for your first time. I actually find light tacky to be the best to train with because it gives good reliable stick, and it’s very easy to apply and remove.

I’ve used tacky in the past. I used spider tacky ‘heavy grade’. My forearms weren’t that bad tbh, it stung like a bitch when i was cleaning it up though. Cause i used MD-40, might try baby oil next time.

To clean up tacky, mix baby oil and sand in a bucket ahead of time. You can reuse it forever, although you have to add some oil from time to time. It works way better than baby oil alone. Usually, I rub it all over my hands for a while and then use my recently removed athletic tape to scrub it for a while. After that, just a little soap and water does the trick.

Mineral Spirits takes it right off.

I typically wouldn’t use tacky unless it was the day of a competition, seemed to make the stones go a lot easier that day. Granted I was only average at stones but it was probably my favorite event.
