i know… i can’t even look at him straight on anymore. i have to just catch glimpses out of the corner of my eye. it really makes spotting hard at times.
What’s the reason for using a swiss bar?
From watching your videos and reading your posts, it just seems to put you guys at risk of injuring yourselves.

my shoulders have been acting up lately from all the heavy straight bar squatting i was doing. the neutral grip of the swiss bar is much easier on the shoulders for overhead pressing. unfortunately there’s a learning curve that i’m still in the middle of with that particular implement.
deads- had an awesome night!!! this is only the second time pulling conventional from the floor since switching from sumo. i’m very happy with my progress on these. i’m down in the 240’s now and conventional is very comfortable now.
dead warmup
135x4
225x4
315x4
405x4
working sets- against chains
495 + 100lbs of chain x 1
565 + 130lbs of chain x 1 (should have added 5 mor lbs to make it an even 700 at the top)
deficit deadlifts
315 + 100lbs of chain x 1
405 + 100lbs of chain x 1
455 + 100lbs of chain x 1
500 + 100lbs of chain x 1- this set felt awesome. these are just what i need to get my speed up off the floor.
GHR’s
BW x 8 x 3- really trying to work on slowing down the eccentric portion of these. it’s hard.
2-16-11 Deadlifts
Conventional Deadlifts
6x135
4x225
3x315
1x405
1x495+100 lb chain
1x565 +100 lb chain +20 LB PR
Deficit Deadlifts 3" deficit
1x300+100 lb chain
1x405+100 lb chain
1x455+100 lb chain +50 LB PR
GHR
8xBW
6xBW
6xBW
That’s it. Really happy with those heavy sets. One more week of heavy lifting, then it’s just smooth sailing til the competition.
By the way, I haven’t mentioned it yet, but I got married a couple weeks ago.
The big wedding is in June, but we got married early for other reasons (no she isn’t pregnant, lol). A few days after we got married she flew to England for a couple weeks, where we will be moving for 3 years this August. I am flying out tomorrow for several days while we check out the place and decide on where we will be living. Pretty exciting stuff. ![]()
The biggest thing I am not looking forward to is leaving scott and bill to train by myself over there. Training partners make a world of a difference. Maybe I’ll find some strong brit like Tom Martin to train with, lol.
Meat:: Man… Nice work on those conventional deads…and you’re down to the 240’s now huh? Trying out for sports illustrated cover soon? ![]()
Joey: Congrats on getting hitched…you have any idea where you’re going to be moving to in England?
Be warned, the food there sucks and the training mentality there is even worse…maybe i just found the wrong places to train but every place Ive been to over there, aside from this little spot in Bristol, has been Planet Fitness to the max…

That is pretty much what I am assuming. I know there are some small hidden gyms around there… just gotta find them. Even so, Loren said the gym on a base that I can use is pretty nice. Deadlift platform and all that…
We will be moving right near Oxford. I’m flying out tonight and we will be deciding if it will be in the city, or with the sheep. ![]()
Oh yeah the base gyms are actually pretty nice too… i didn’t realize you had access to that…sweet…
I’d go the sheep route, for obvious reasons…
Beastly work with the deadlifts.
Joweee, congrats on getting hitched. Pics or it didn’t happen… I hope that you’ll be able to continue making progress on your own, but it’s going to be tough w/o any Meat in your training.
Good luck Jowee. Spent a lot of time in the UK, I actually like the food. And great beer. I somehow remembered hearing about the Oxford Powerlifting Club a couple of years ago:
Also, the good thing about the UK is you will actually be good looking there:)
And yeah, sheep, can’t go wrong with sheep…
a word to the wise- i had let my protein intake lapse some and i really started to pay for it. last week i had a really good deadlift session and then later in the week i had my bench session. since my protein intake was lacking, i never recovered from the deadlift session and my bench session sucked royally. i was literally stapled to the bench on my last set. all of my warmup sets leading to that one was slow and i felt weak. after being stapled i knew i needed to get back on track with my diet. since then i’ve been getting in at least 2 grams per pound of bodyweight. i went in today and smoked that weight like it was nothing.
moral of the story… diet is just as important as the training.
bench day-
warmup- foam press
135x10
225x10
315x10
405x5
working sets- bench against chains
225 + 100lbs of chain x 1
275 + 100lbs of chain x 1
315 + 100lbs of chain x 1
365 + 100lbs of chain x 1
405 + 130lbs of chain x 1 + 30lb PR of chain
close grip bench- to foam, paused, feet up
225x10
315x10
tate press
40’s x 10
50’s x 10
60’s x 10
skwattts- i’m love’n the cambered bar. i can really tell this bar will supplement my deadlift well. i can feel these in the hams and glutes throughout the lift. i’m still feeling out the movement and upping the weight. i’m also going deep with a really long pause to make the movement as close to an actual dead as possible.
cambered bar squat- paused
0 x 6
190 x 4
280 x 4
370 x 2
460 x 1
510 x 1 + 50lbs from last time
front squats- deep and not locking out
135 x 15,20,25
leg press- not locking out
6 plates x 30,40,50
seated calf raise
some x 20 x 3
quads are all swole. too bad we don’t have any mirrors to flex in front of.
that is a fun bar, might have to play around with the one we have for a wave
Great video.
Some of us would be happy to witness some swole quad flexing, but you’d have to wear shorts and I don’t recall ever seeing that. ![]()

Translation: kimba wants you to do some swole quad flexing in front of the camera, and she’ll be happy to act as the “mirror”. lol
That looks like an awesome exercise. For some reason, it makes me think of it as a great way to train for lugging a body from one spot to another (firemen, field medics?). The core stabilization required for that must be insane.
edit: p.s. why do you keep wearing those shoulder pads when you work out? ![]()
Yo. Sittin here at the airport. Fligt is delayed a couple hours. England was awesome and the beer is amazing. The food is amazing too i dunno why everyone says t sucks. I didnt even ever try fish but the chips were good… paid for some wifi while i wait but the IP must be blocked on the game i play to kill time. Sob. We found a couple villages we like a lot with a pub and store for a short walk.
Scott, u guys training on wednesday or thursday? I forget. Burger just came and im starving. I feel like im gettin sick, hopefully its not too bad. Cant wait to deadlift when i get back.
Cheers!

Lol. I have never seen scott in shorts either… i would like to witness it.
Bill and I have tank tops we train in sometimes… scott mentioned joining the club. Thats another one on my liat of things to see, lol.

i like to stay covered when i train. i’ve tried wearing shorts and a tshirt but once i break a sweat i always get cold and then i tighten up.
i’m sure to do all my flex’n in the mirror right before i take a shower:)
