I will fall on the sword X. Its fucking retarded to make a comment that you have to ability to judge someone within minutes of meeting them. I will give her a pass and I think we all did by trying to have an intelligent discussion.
But again you are right females are the most judgemental species on the planet earth. They are worse with each other, you work with females, I work with females. My whole adult life has been in the medical field working with females. I am sure in the OP she was discussing other females she works with.
Nice try. I don’t work at the moment. I just attend school. To give you an example of what I meant by a judgment call, let’s take a professor I despised so much I stopped going to his class (he would make fun of students for asking questions, dodge the questions, not come to class prepared with even a calculator (it was physics and he would waste time doing shit by hand), and generally just gave off the impression he considered the class a joke). Now, I did meet with this guy outside of class twice and would say he was charismatic, charming, trying hard to be a good father (which he was probably more concerned about than the class), took pride in being laid back and enjoying a good time, and has gotten by in life by being intelligent and fun. He was also careless and tried to joke everything off when caught in an uncomfortable spot.
Everyone else in the class said terrible things about him and I overheard people discussing how “awkward” it was to run into him outside of class. I didn’t find that was the case when I just tried smiling and waving. I did hate his class, though, regardless of the grade I received. He was just not invested in teaching that material.

You feel your talent in life is being able to make instantaneous, inerrant judgments about the strengths and weaknesses of any individual?
I am going to have to agree with Professor X that you are probably flattering yourself with this super power. While I agree that it is certainly possible to ‘read’ people over the course of a brief encounter, particularly with regards to stressful situations and only as far as certain traits or inconsistencies are concerned, being able to accurately judge the spectrum of one’s character as far as evaluating their ‘strengths and weaknesses’ is something that would take a little more time.
The only person I’ve seen who can do this is House… and he isn’t real.
As far as your actual topic is concerned: yes, I can see the silver lining on the piles of shit I see every day just as I notice the occasional smudges on the otherwise pristine characters of people whom I also happen across.
Of course, I still classify people as douchebags based on single tidbits of information because, shit, I see a lot of people over the course of my day and I need some way to filter out the rabble. While I wouldn’t consider these pricks to be Satan incarnate, if they happen to personify any particular trait I find distasteful I happily reserve the right to just consider them a piece of shit - or, at the very least, not give a crap about them - and move along rather than dirty myself rummaging around piles of coal hunting for potential diamonds.
I think most people operate the same way. Very few people, I would think, genuinely believe that any one person is “all bad” or “infallible”. However, there will always be traits that ultimately color one’s perception of an individual, whether it is the many small ones that allow one to conclude the person is an all-around good fella or even a single horrible one that forces one to believe that the person is a scumbag.
I’m sure more than a few of the Catholic kiddie diddlers did some good work in between pressuring underaged boys into blowing them, but I certainly wouldn’t be shedding any tears if they took a bullet to the face. Likewise, I would still consider Mother Teresa a good lady if I found out she enjoyed the occasional shoplifting binge.
I think I didn’t clarify what I meant by “being able to understand a person’s strengths and weaknesses” in my OP. I’m actually not great a gauging a person by first impressions and find that my original opinion depends on the situation. It usually takes me a decent amount of observation to form an accurate opinion.
Also, I’ve noticed it’s easier to truly laugh at someone once you understand them and they you. That’s when you understand the somewhat pointless reasons they do meaningless things, like forgetting their keys or slipping in conversation, exactly the way they do and it’s endearing because they “always” do that.
What I meant by “at once” was the first definition of the idiom:
Idiom:
at once
(I can see all of her personality strengths and weaknesses at the same time. Nothing excludes recognition of something else.)
So you were just being redundant? Or just backpedaling now?
Goddamn I hate communicating on the internet sometimes (yet sadly have little better to do with my time right now… lol)
EVERYONE has the ability to figure out another’s strengths and weaknesses. This thread is about the fact that PEOPLE CHOOSE NOT TO and WHY THEY DON’T.
For instance, if you find out certain unpleasant things about another person, it’s often game-over. Example: they brutally killed someone. Or, from one of my own experiences, I met a kid who went to jail for shaking and otherwise harming his baby. At that point, most people stop seeing the person as complete.
Much less extreme example of this exist, though. Sometimes something such as simple incompetence a one particular taste will cause everyone in the room to think the person is incompetent at ALL tasks. For example, you serve at a restaurant it’s not your forte. You mess up a lot. Most other people working the job will assume you’re stupid in all aspects of your life because you can’t keep tables straight. My Dad actually had this experience and is a computer genius. It would be funny if it wasn’t so sad.

Great post Anonym.
I am struggling to see the point of OP’s question. I read it thinking, doesn’t everybody do that? Are you asking is everyone judgmental or why are people so judgmental?
Reading people is very complex. High end jury consultants get paid pretty wellon high profile cases for example. Jo Ellen Dimetrius, sp, has a great book out with the title Reading People. Imagine that.
If you want to know why we stereotype people and their personalities, take a look at the “What to tell daughter about boys” and “What to tell son about girls” threads. I never used to understand why men were always looked down upon by so many women in such a broad way, but after hearing so many people say that all men are pigs and so forth, including from a lot of men, I understood where this negative stigma comes from.
Can’t quite say the same about women. There seemed to be a more wide-ranging take on what to tell their sons about women, but a couple of very common assessments (that were negative) were that women are untrustworthy and that they are harder to understand than quantum physics.
I think when we grow up being told these sort of blanket statements about a demographic as diverse as MEN and WOMEN, it’s only natural that stereotypes arise even before we have a chance to really form an evaluation on our own. When you’ve been told that all men are lying scumbags, you naturally tend to look at everything negative that a man does as evidence of this and as something that is natural for him. Eventually you begin to look for men to do these things because you expect it from them and then you interpret virtually everything about men through this set of lenses.
I don’t know. I just fucking hate when I hear people slam men all the time. We’re not all a bunch of pieces of shit and I get real sick and tired of this stereotype of the dumbed-down, perpetually drunk man who has three emotions: elation over the result of a football game, anger over the result of a football game or debilitating confusion over virtually anything that comes out of a woman’s mouth.
(My 2 centz)…“T-shirts and Tattoos are for reading…get to KNOW me!” (I’m all out of monies now…)
Funny Story…kinda…I was at the beach…and one assuming/judgemental woman, commented that “…tattoos symbolize a lack of intellectual expression, so people who have them, use them as a display for what they themselves cannot convey…” yada yada yada…
and then she asks me what it says on my back “anyway”…and what the hell it means…LOLOLOLOL!
(avatar pic is unclear, but it says PRODIGAL…i’m sure many of you are familiar with the Biblical story)
should I assume people w/o tattoos can’t read, or better yet, don’t read the Bible? J/K
(as an aside) I bagged her later!(sorry mom) Maybe she likes dummies…LOL. I’m really not, but I play one on TV…

Yeah I’m pretty sure as far as external appearances go, I’ve got “idiot” down to a T. Powerlifter, Tattoos, Marine…yeah. But I kind of like when people underestimate me…makes them easier to manipulate (as you proved by bagging her).
