Stephen Colbert's Poor Choice of Words

Did anyone catch the Colbert Report last night? He did a segment on Mark McGwire and his steroid use. In mentioning other steroid users in baseball, he mentioned Sammy Sosa’s HGH usage, and Roger Clemens’ “anabolic use…” I normally applaud Stephen Colbert for his accurate depiction of current events, but this bothered me. Does anyone else get asked the question “you’re on an anabolic substance? isn’t that a steroid?” a few times a year? Or something close to that? He’s pretty popular, and using the word “anabolic” in reference to steroid use (without using the word “steroid”) could have large repercussions on how people think of the word.

Opinions?

Let’s try to keep this from looking like the “Mark McGwire Admits to Steroid Use” thread.

No? Getting asked that would require me to tell them that “I’m on an anabolic substance.”

“Anabolics” is used as a reference to anabolic steroids on this site, by steroid users. The context to steroids was already made anyways so you’re looking too far into the whole issue as is. Once he brought up Clemens and Sosa, and a substance like HGH, the general public already has “steroids” at the forefront of their mind, so he basically used the word without saying it.

stupid thread… dont be a nit picking bitch.

you tell people youre on an anabolic substance a few times a year? what are you taking, prohormones? protein powder is technically anabolic too, but not in the way that most people usually think. thats why they can get away with writing anabolic 15 different times on the labels of monster mass, etc.

you really cant expect the general public to differentiate between whatever your taking and steroids.

No. But I do have people over at my place of living at least a FEW times a year, which (strangely enough) where I keep my supplements. I know, I’m crazy. I assume you have people at your house sometimes? Although, if noone ever visited you that would explain why noone sees your stuff, which COULD have “Anabolic” written on the label, which COULD prompt them to ask if you’re on steroids. But who am I to assume.

I just looked to my right, both Anaconda and MAG-10 have ‘Anabolic’ written in all caps right below their respective titles. I can see how people would ask you this question now.

Why are you worried about this? If you had some real size on you, people would be thinking that anyway whether you ever did or not. Why waste your time defending something that even the people asking don’t really care about?

Anyone clueless enough to see the word “anabolic” on a fucking supplement that you bought legally and immediately think this means “steroids” is a lost cause to start with. Do you really think they care about an explanation of how it’s really protein or anything else?

WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU WATCHING THE COLBERT REPORT WHEN THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH CONAN O’BRIEN IS STILL ON. DON’T DO THAT AGAIN.

THANKS.

Because John Stewart and Colbert are on an hour earlier… and even if they aren’t in your area… they’re definitely more entertaining

Food’s pretty anabolic… am I going to jail now? :frowning:

you even bother to read the rest of what i wrote? i said you cant expect the general public to differentiate between protein powder and steroids. however, i dont currently have anything i take that says anabolic all over it.

Especially if he eats meat, because that will destroy Mother Earth, for like, forever!

If you’re watching Stephen Colbert and actually get offended you may need to rethink the idea of watching Stephen Colbert.

Once the word Anabolic is villified then scrutinized by the FDA,the supplement companies will have to resort to the word "Anti-Catabolic". That was the big selling point in the 90s.

I had other points I was going to make but that was the major one so fuck it, thanks X.
