'Standard' Grip for Close Grip Bench Press?

i bought a new barbell, gave the old to my buddy, this new gets a different knurling size,i’m using it for CGBP with 35cm/17’ between hands, what’s (IF any) the standard?

There is no standard per say. ‘The closest distance that allows the movement to be performed without flaring the elbows’ is how I would describe the ‘rule of thumb’.

Whatever allows you to feel your triceps doing the most work without breaking your wrists.

+1

This would probably be shoulder width for most people. Using thumbless grip might let you get away with a slightly closer grip.

thanx guys,I had a go today with 17’grip,slighter loads than usual but no problem with wrists and tris did all the work

Yeah generally about shoulder width is optimal.

I go a tiny bit wider, personally, like maybe an inch or so.

yep but …with a slightly wider grip (elbow super-tucked in) I can use an heavier load, with a narrower less load but it looks like tris are working more, what’s best approach?

yeah sounds like what CT prescribes. I believe he has people do CGP so that their index fingers are just outside their shoulders at the bottom.

I do mine with my hands about 10" apart.

it all depends on the arm length of someone. 10" would probably murder my wrists, maybe not for ID.

I go the same width as I dead lift with. My a thumbs length from the inside knurling. Puts my hands about thumbs width from my chest at the bottom.

as others have said, whatever lets you track your elbows along your sides the whole way up and down. When ifound this grip whic is wider than what alot of ppl initially advocate as close grip i gained alot of strength and size on da tri’s, just mess around with it man.

thanx to all

Exactly.
