Stalled Squats

Squats are really my only lift that are stalling. I’ve been running SS for a couple months now and I can’t seem to increase them. Even tried swapping my squats over to the Madcow method and still nothing. I usually get them to 275-285x5 and they always stall there. All my other lifts usually increase after a good deload and emphasis on form.

Is there another routine I can mix in with SS to help increase them. I’ve already added good mornings and I think it’s just a general weakness of squats not one area specifically yet.

Eating definitely isn’t an issue, I’ve gained about 15lbs this year already.

Maybe a form issue? Post a vid for the guys on here to help you.

Sure, you can really tell from this video that I don’t keep my body very tight hence I wear a belt at low weights. Also I squat high bar.

your stance seems a bit too wide for high bar. have you tried smolov jr? if you haven’t you might want to check it out.

Your knees are caving in a lot and you seem extremely quad dominant. Really focus on spreading the floor with your feet. This should give you a nice rebound out of the bottom position. Also try to sit back a little more instead of just down. Try low bar out and work on upper back tightness.

Very true, my quads are 26" and I only weigh 185±. I’ll give low bar another shot. Will deload to 225 and work up with low bar. Thanks.

Make sure you keep your ass pushed back and stay on your heel/mid-foot.

Looks like you have the pins setup too high. You stumble out into your stance and then you’re on your toes when you rerack it. Lower the pins and that should help with your tightness/setup issues.

I tried low bar squats today. Holy shit they hurt my back, guess I’ve just got to get used to 'em. Had to drop 50lbs off my squat though. Run SS to get em back up. Didn’t get a video but I tried “spreading the floor” and sitting back more. Did sum box squats to get that feel. I’ll record them on wednesday to get some more critique, thanks guys

You’ll get used to it in a week lol. The more you squeeze your shoulder blades together, the bigger the “shelf” you’ll have to put the bar on. Which will also make it much comfier.

I feel box squats are an excellent way to learn both of those ques. I focus on making the squat as little a hip and knee extension and as much of a hard hip abduction as possible. It really helps me store energy on the descent that I can use to spring out of the hole or off the box. It also feels more natural with practice and is easier on my joints for me.

You’re coming forward on your toes, from what I can tell. Focus on sitting back and putting the weight on your heels. Also, bring your stance in a bit.

Last - your elbows aren’t tucked underneath the bar hard enough. Really try and squeeze the shit out of your back.

CS

Its because of your gym music.

It must be sapping a good 10-15% of your potential manliness right there.

I actually just changed gyms yesterday lol. The music they play is a bit better and they actually have a platform so I don’t have to do deadz in the squat rack haha.

Thanks again, you guys are really helpful. On BB.com people would have just talked shit and said I need to eat more.

You don’t have to switch to low bar if you don’t want to. Watch videos of Max Aita and Andy Ruse on youtube, they both squat with a high bar and are successful with it. Sure most squat with low bar but if your preference is to high bar watch these guys squat and learn from that.

With low bar, make sure your wrists, elbows, shoulders, and hips stay healthy. Since you’re trying to learn low bar make sure you practice it a lot, but you may find that once you’re used to it it’ll take a toll on your joints and you may want to do some high bar squatting instead if your far out from a meet or testing a max. If I’m more than 5 or 6 weeks out from doing maxes on comp. lifts, all my straight bb lifts will be high bar.

Would it be worthwhile to work on a different squat variation for a few weeks/month?

Add a new technique such as squatting off the pins?

Include the use of bands and/or chains emphasizing acceleration and speed?

Do some speed workout. I had the same problem as you stalling at 300-315 and i’ve decide to add one day a week a DE day were i would do speed box squat. It really unblock me and in a year I add 100 pound to my squat.

Its obviously a music issue

If you plan on using gear one day it’s good to learn low bar and the traditional PL style of squatting though.ã??Something to keep in mind for OP
