Stability Ball, Good?

Hi…Im just wondering if anyone here has ever used a stability ball in any of their work outs and in what way.

I have a feeling this topic has been discussed berore, anyways.

They have many uses, most people agree crunches are more effective over a ball.

Ive also used the ball to dynamically strengthen my serratus anterior.

Funny you should mention this right now. I just got an email about one of the guys who got me into lifting over 5 years ago, and he was doing dumbbell presses on one of those stability balls with 80 lb. dumbbells and the thing popped and it broke both of his arms! Hes a little over 50 years old but in great shape.

Ive never used them but I would assume they have their place.

I don’t use the full swiss ball for too much other than crunches and the occasional experimental stretch. However, I have recently found the bosu ball really handy for ankle p/rehab.

I’ve sprained/strained/possibly broken my right one a few times and my left one is sprained right now (stepped on a friggin dog toy). Just standing on it one footed and sort of rotating the ankle/foot has helped stretch out and keep ROM while the left one heals.

And one legged half squats and calf raises have helped build some stability in the right one to hopefully avoid screwing it up even more this coming season.

I like to sit on them between sets. Does that count??

Push-ups on a ball seem to work the stabilizer muscles in your shoulders while you get the chest benefits of regular pushups.

You have to be careful, some balls are cheap and not made to be used with more than bodyweight.

My wife bought one of these from Sams. A purple one from GoFit which is supposed to be good to 1200 pounds or something.

I don’t see it as useLESS and have in fact played around with it, but if I were forced to give up one piece of equipment that would be the first to go.

Also, on further reflection there could have been unreported factors that account for this guy popping one. Like an object on the floor or something. The one we have seems pretty tough.

This is indeed the most optimal use of squishy balls. In addition to this I use them for straight arm DB pullovers. I find the benches are typically taken and they don’t allow me to scapulate as well as he ball thing.

I’ve always feared that. I stopped using a stability ball when I was repping out 50 lbs. as much as I could and couldn’t swing them and get up. I mean I was completely spent and fell off the ball and threw the dumbbells. I’m just glad someone wasn’t in front of me at the time.

I like to set one on the floor, then get a running start and roll across the top, sort of superman like, then plant my hands and do a sommersault or hand spring.

They are also fun to kick at other peoples heads. They get walloped real good, but it doesn’t hurt. Much better than a basket ball or medicine ball.

So, yea, they’re good for all kinds of stuff.

I worked my way upto doing swiss ball chest presses with 110lbs in each arm a few years ago.

I think if youre going to play around with weights on the ball, you shoud own and maintain your own ball.

People kick them into machines, etc possile causing some damage.

Find me a picture of Arnold using a swiss ball and maybe I’ll think about it. It’s a gadget.

How 'bout Joe DeFranco?

I’m not saying swiss balls are all that useful all the time. But they have their uses every now and then.

I know some of the Westside guys have advocated high-rep dumbell presses on the ball during de-loading weeks or as a change of pace.

Yeah, you’re gonna need to do a little better than that. Find me a picture of Arnold reading T-Nation.
