Squatting to Failure or Not?

Hello guys,
A quick question to those who squat often ( every day or almost everyday ) . When do you stop your squats ? Do you go to a complete failure ( loose the bar ), or you leave some energy in the " tank " ?

If , for example, you did your last set/ rep and it was realy difficult, do you risk ( 50/50 chance of making the lift ) and do another set ( 1 rep ) , or just leave it and come back next day ? When I say " a set ", I mean a set, which consists of 1 rep max of course. Thanks for any input guys.

In my opinion, you should keep failures to an absolute minimum. That isn’t to say you should never push it, but if you think there’s a significant chance of missing the weight, you probably shouldn’t try it.

Depends on what style of programme you’re doing but I agree with ox in general. However when you’re going for a max/new max there’s always a chance of failure! I’m sure there’s some clever quote about not knowing what’s enough until you know what’s too much :slight_smile:

I agree with both responses. There’s a difference between failure due to being exhausted/fatigued (i.e. lots of reps/sets etc), and failure when going for a new 1 rep max. Failures on the latter type are fine, even daily. You go for a big weight (legs warm but fresh), if you miss it, all good. Your legs won’t be blown the next day from that. Taking your legs to exhaustion however and really grinding it out on weights that you’d otherwise be explosive under (certainly on a daily basis) will take a toll…

Take the Chinese approach.
First, take stretch of time (4-6 weeks)and squat to failure. If during that time your snatch and C@J go up than keep squatting to failure.
Second, if they don’t go up, then try leaving some in the tank and see how that effects your snatch and C@J.
Squats, like any accessory lift are there to improve your lifts.
I mean if dumbell tricep kick backs puts 15 lbs on your clean and jerk the chinese will be doing dumbell tricep kickbacks. Because they are open to trying. You should be to with everything.
