Squatting Barefoot?

I was wondering if anyone here has tried squatting barefoot and if they noticed a drop off in weight with their first time going barefoot compared to wearing wearing shoes.

I don’t, but I remember Cressey recommending it. I don’t really see why it would cause you to lift less unless you’re mind fucking yourself, thinking about it too much.

I always squat barefoot. It feels more comfortable for me. I don’t know if there are any benefits, but I don’t see anything wrong with it.

I think Pavel claims it will bring up your squat numbers.

i’ve done it…but never noticed a drop in numbers

I know the nanosecond I try it I will drop a plate on my toe. Guaranteed.

It’s nice.

unless you’re wearing steel toes in the gym not having shoes on isn’t gonna make much of a difference…

Point taken. But the mere act of being barefoot around weights would cause that to happen to me. The klutz gods do not smile down on me my friend.

haha…i see…

From Pavel’s book. Extensor reflex. “causes the leg musculature to contract in response to the pressure on the sole of your foot. It is a protective measure against loading.”…“research suggests that always wearing shoes diminishes the sensitivity of the foot which may turn off the squat friendly reflex. Extensor reflex recruits the leg muscles in a precise pattern according to the direction of the pressure from the ground. Poorly designed shoes may redirect the pressure where it does not belong and alter the proper recruitment pattern.”

He goes on for two pages but the short version is shoes make you weaker and more likely to injure yourself. If you must wear shoes then get some Chucks or similar hard sole shoes.
