Do you sometimes hate when someone is DLing and has an air about him that he is the biggest badass at the gym because he is DLing and wish it was your DL day so you could show him that, in reality, YOU are the biggest badass in the gym? Not that you would walk around putting on airs if it was your DL day, but now that someone else has upset the understood order of the universe you feel the need to remind some punk that pulling 185 does not a badass make, and you really dont need to wear a belt, gloves and straps to do it.

Yes, and that’s exactly why I deadlift every workout!!! You think I am doing this frequency dominant program for my health? Or for the kicks of it? Hell no!
If I allowed every Born-Insecure-Mother-Fucker to get in my head…
I wouldn’t be on this site, and and I probably wouldn’t be doing what I am doing to this day.
I don’t pay any attention to my inferiors, only superiors, whom I can always learn something from.
PS: I do not get these ‘best movement’ threads…
People get on here and type, like there is only ONE Squat, and ONE DL, ( or whatever ) in these threads, which makes them even more strange.

Dude, its all just for fun. The only serious answer is do both.
I’m going to say deadlift because, other than quadriceps, it works the same muscles as the squat with the addition of the arms and upper back and works the hamstrings much better. The ROM can be increased with a deficit and a wide grip. Squat is the most dangerous exercise and slipping is unforgivable so some effort is wasted on safety and stabilization while the deadlift is relatively stable and safe, as far as traumatic injuries.
I like the deadlift better because I can put myself in the middle of the gym and pile up 5 pps. Always impress the n00bs who ask me later if I am training for the olympics LOL.

Dude, too serious… and too literal. read between the lines and you’ll see my humour. BTW; don’t go postal…
What kind of set/rep scheme do you do for DL? Is trying to increase your 10 rep max the goal? What kind is the best (conventional vs from-deficit or something else), or should you do them all, rotating them in and out?
^ depends of your goal. Conventional deadlift with submaximal weight for 1 max reps top set (like in 531) works for me. Your goal shouldnt be to increase your 10 rep max IMO but it will increase naturally with your 1rm. I have hit 40510 some time ago while chasing 495 and I think I’ll get 45510 while chasing 545
If you could do only one exercise ! Not just choose between deadlift and squat but do ONLY one exercise for the rest of your life while having the objective to look at good as possible, what would you pick?

A lot depends on your height. Very tall people (I am 6’7") might be more prone to injury from squats. There was an article on here a few years ago about squatting for tall folks, which would be a good read.
I probably prefer the DL because it mimics more of what we do in real life. Rarely do we balance a heavy weight on our shoulders, but lifting off the ground is pure and natural. It also strengthens the hands and, IMHO, would be superior for grapplers.

Well if their deadlifting 185 they better be a girl. If it aint, then I’ll ask if I can work in and start cleaning and pressing their DL weight. Then say “thanks for letting me warmup”
Sorry - I was board and there’s no good content on the site today!!
It really depends on how you perform each exercise. I think a proper dead is ass right down, initial drive from the legs, and lockout from the hips. But I see so many guys essentially doing a stiff leg from the floor, using very little leg drive. Poor form to me, but still a deadlift. And then there are the squatters that jiggle up and down with a 6" ROM.
Both exercises are awesome. Both are whole-body exercises, but I think the DL is more of an all-arounder. If forced, I’d go for it, but I’d use the squatlift bar (trap bar) to recruit more leg drive.

For this reason, I say deadlift.
Let’s be honest, you’d make some shit up that’s like, reverse grip row into a hang clean into a front squat into a military press, and that’s why this argument is dumb and pointless.
I’d argue that the deadlift is a more natural movement. I think early humans would’ve benefitted more from being able to pick up heavy objects such as hunted animals, felled trees, rocks, and other people; than to put heavy objects on their backs and drop down to below parallel.
Whether one is more beneficial than the other is a matter of personal experience and scientific analysis. Personally, the deadlift is much easier for me. My max conventional is 445 lbs whereas my full olympic squat is just below 315 lbs. Based on feel though, a good squat feels better to me than a good deadlift; but thats just me.
…gotta go for DL, for the badassness of how it looks. And the looks you get from the nearby mortals who (when you’re done) are SURE you are “on those steroid shakes”
& the thickness in the back and traps is good too I guess
