This thread just keeps getting better.
I was a young guy in the days of tight 501’s, and apparantly squats gave me a pretty nice backside. In fact, when I introduced myself to the girl that would become my wife, she told me she knew who I was because her and her friends had pegged me as the guy with the “best ass on campus”.
Thank you squats.
Beleive it or not, DL"s will improve the glutes much more than squats which only enlarge them in an unnatural way. Again, if it was surgically possible (and feasible) I’d gladly have 2" removed from my glutes and relocated to my traps in a heartbeat. Huge traps that hold up an 18" lean neck (not turkey waddle double chin) are MUCH more impressive.
Its interesting to me how when stimulated to grow (DEADLIFT) the muscles on the posterior side of the body (traps, lats, glutes, hams, calves) are much more useful/impressive than any muscles of the anterior (pecs, quads, biceps, etc.). Yet more reasons to drop the squat and DEADLIFT.
Deadlifts.
Because doing deadlifts make me feel like a very bad man.
They’ll sure make you feel better than the squat will. Besides developing a thicker, more powerful physique.

I vote Deads.
Of course I’m biased. I have a bad back (L3-L4 instability, bad dry disc) but have been able to incorporate deads rather than squats with less pain.
I especially like using the trap bar, neutral grip, better center of gravity.
Bad squatting technique coupled with genetics = my bad back.
Do them right or don’t do them at all!
Same with deads, no rounding of the back. I train my clients at Midwest Kettlebell to practice facing the wall and deadlifting a kettlebell to get the proper form.
Best of luck in your Training!

If I had to pick one I vote deadlifts, and its variations, for mass and overall strength gains.
Traditional DLs are more of a back exercise for me.
Sumo has been a great leg developer since you need to “squat” it off the floor and has less back involvement…but hammers my traps more than traditional for some reason.
Snatch grip from a deficit (love / hate relationship with those) works legs (again, you need to squat it first) and back.
I think deadlift. I see more half assed heavy squats done more than anything on guys trying to get their numbers up. Deadlifts typically incorporate a higher load, releasing more GH and stressing more muscles than the squat. Squats are also great though, IMO the mental aspect of having a ton of weight on your back trying to sit you on your ass revs up the intensity of the lift
Thread Revival for sure.
But if I had to choose one, deadlifts for sure. I think they greatly help with body thickness and work a lot of muscle groups.
Plus it just feels badass having the whole gym of people who haven’t done them look at you pulling up all that weight.
The deadlift has always felt more natural and more satisfying to me. Can’t really think of any movement that could replace it. Squat can be replaced on the other hand. As soon as I reached 1.5x BW I dropped the back squat in favour of Hack Squat, Leg Press. My hips feel better, my ass has stopped growing in width and I can actually feel the hack squat and leg press much better in the quads.
Deadlift, not even close.
<3 2 DL
Its all about scaring people in my commercial/university gym. Im not even sure its making me bigger, but I do feel it has increased my killing power.
I love doing deads. Back squats feel funny to me, so I tried front squats today and they felt much more natural.
All this means is that I need to do is get stronger and more flexible so I can do back squats more regularly. I might just do one day of each to learn them both.
deadlifts, its simple, hard to cheat on, and nothing feels better or looks more badass than lifting a heavy load off the ground. And if it happens to be a little too heavy and you have to struggle, or grind, for a couple of seconds, then that just feels like i came in my shorts.
Squats hands down! but mainly cause I love the soreness that comes along with them 2-3 days after doing them
Do you sometimes hate when someone is DLing and has an air about him that he is the biggest badass at the gym because he is DLing and wish it was your DL day so you could show him that, in reality, YOU are the biggest badass in the gym? Not that you would walk around putting on airs if it was your DL day, but now that someone else has upset the understood order of the universe you feel the need to remind some punk that pulling 185 does not a badass make, and you really dont need to wear a belt, gloves and straps to do it.
Dont lie, the thought has entered your head.

Yes, and that’s exactly why I deadlift every workout!!! You think I am doing this frequency dominant program for my health? Or for the kicks of it? Hell no!

If I allowed every Born-Insecure-Mother-Fucker to get in my head…
I wouldn’t be on this site, and and I probably wouldn’t be doing what I am doing to this day.
I don’t pay any attention to my inferiors, only superiors, whom I can always learn something from.
PS: I do not get these ‘best movement’ threads…
People get on here and type, like there is only ONE Squat, and ONE DL, ( or whatever ) in these threads, which makes them even more strange.
