Besides in terms of certain types of athletic use, what are the benefits of doing non-full ROM squats?
Just ego?

Most of the time is plain Ignorance.
Unfortunately, a LOT of people have been lead to believe full ROM squats are bad. Others lost the flexibility to go ATG overtime, and don’t know what they can do to regain it.
I never even fell the squat working my legs unless i use a slightly higher volume. As a Beginner, you should use at least a 8-10 rep-range for squats in my opinion, going slightly lower then thighs parallel to the ground.
Generally, whatever hurts your ego the most is what you should probably spend most of your time doing.
