Squats FTW

Prolog (21.04.2010):

I tought I did 250kg in the raw squat last summer, but after doublechecking the weights, I realized I had only lifted 243kg! Later the year I managed to increase my squat to 247kg raw. Early this year, I have been struggeling with a medial meniscus injury in my left knee. I have adjusted my training, and I am now a lot better, and I’m squatting serious, although overall volume and intensity has been reduced, to help me recuperate better, and to avoid more injuries.

In the summer 2010 (July), it will be 10 years since I started training with weights. I’ve set myself two goals till then: 250kg raw squat and 150kg raw bench. Currently my bench press i at 147.5kg, and my squat is at 235kg.

This log will be kept until these goals are reached. The goal is to do 150kg bench press at 8th of may, and a 250kg squat in approximately two months.

Here’s the current madness:

My only priorites now is the squat, and the bench press. Everything else is not important at the moment. My schedule is very busy these days, so I guess most of my log entries will be brief and to the point. Log entries will also show about 5-7kg lighter weights than the training schedules above, this is due to the fact that the weights I use are on average 2.5% too light, so when I make a program it is most convenient to use the numbers that are written on the weight plates, but when I report my lifting, I think it is important to write down the actual numbers, so that is what I do in my videos and in my log. There’s also a log at kraftsport.no. Closed norwegian forum. Let this log be an inspiration for you all. It is not so important that you think I am strong, the important thing is that YOU work hard to achive your goals, and I go and show that when a man decides for something, and want it bad enough, he will get it! There is no “if” and “maybe”. You decide, then you act!

Let the hunt proceed!

old info ----------------------------------------

Stats:

Country: Norway
Gender: Male
Age: 31
Bw: Approx: 115kg
Bodyfat percentage: What?? I am a strength athlete, not a bodybuilder!
Arm Girth: Huh? I never train biceps…
Occupation: Computer engineer student
Training history: Total of 17 years (only last 9 years with weight training)
Genetic talent: Talent for throwing, not for strength or speed. Was very weak when I started training, and I have never gotten anything for free. I guess if there is any talent that I posess, it is the ability to NEVER give up, and never to listen to people that say things can’t be done.

Current personal best lifts, raw and without a belt:
Squat: 242.5kg
Benchpress: 142.5kg
Deadlift: 230kg

(I think the deadlift is just as good as the squat, but I barely
missed a 240kg deadlift a while ago, and haven’t bothered to retry it yet, so
I put the weight I have actually done as my 1RM.)

For those that’s been hanging around the strength forum, I should be known as a lifter
that is pretty much obsessed about the squat. That’s the very reason I am alive. And I
have only one life, so it is important to get as strong as possible!

This year I had a goal of getting a 250kg squat by June. By the way things have been working out now, I will not hit this goal if I continue my 20 rep challenge. I have been onto that for too long now, and frankly I am tired of it. There has been very big demands in real life in relation with my studies, and this has interfered with my progress, and as much as I hate that, the studies are priority #1. And when that means I have to stay up all night to get finished before a project deadline, that’s what I do. And that’s what I have done. As much as I like to promote the slogan: “NO EXCUSES”, there is a time for everything, and now is a time to get a proper education. However, this will not make me stop training, or make me stop wanting new big personal records!

I am determined to become a very good squatter. Why? Because I want to compete? No, not really, but if I get so strong that I think I can place top 3 in the IPF nationals, then I might compete again. For the time being I am content with training just for the sake of getting stronger.

So, early this year I set my goal of hitting a 250kg squat in June this year. I recently tested my 1RM, and made 242.5kg, that was a PR with 2.5kg. However I think my strength is about the same as it was in February when I did 240kg. So the high reps haven’t helped much on 1RM strength. And this is also as expected.

Here is the 242.5kg lift:

The reason with this log is to get some feedback, to show off (don’t we all like that to some extent?), and hopefully be an inspiration to some of you.

However I will abort this log when the goal is met. That is a 250kg raw squat (no belt). Optionally I would like to have a 200kg front squat to (pb: 192.5kg), and perhaps increase my bench as well. I have no high expectations for my bench, I will just train it seriously, and then it will become better.

I see no reason to put down the details of my planned training with reps and sets and weights now, but I can say that I am going to do the Smolov Base Meso Cycle, and that I have absolute confidence in this program, and I am certain that I will hit my goal, coming the end of June.

I am right in the middle of my final exams for this year, and that may make things harder, but I still want to do a hard and brutal program, I have done it before while having a busy schedule, so I can do it again.

The program will start the coming monday, the 1st of June, and I will do my best to post updates. There might be sporadic video updates, and I will say how the training went, how much details there will be, is yet to be determined. I guess I will write just whatever I feel like.

If anyone wants to check in from time to time to see how it goes, that’s something I do appreciate. If anyone wants to be evil, they will be ignored. Using energy on internet trolls is futile, and I want to focus on the task at hand.

I look forward to the coming monday! I’ve been resting my legs for many days now, I hate resting the legs!

I guess I am so excited about the upcoming program, that I need to make a post #2 already.

It will be very interesting to see how I will respond to the high reps in the program. The high rep days are only 9 reps, and since I’ve been doing high reps since February, this should be like a blast! I almost can’t wait! I’m like a child waiting to open the gifts at Xmas! I can already feel the sweet taste of success I will feel when I make an easy 250kg squat by the end of this cycle. I am so confident, that I have said, If I cannot do it, I will change my nickname from admin to bitch on the lifting forum I am running. And I will keep the name “bitch” for the rest of the year if I fail to perform!

Decide to win and you will!

– stallion

Ahhh…Let the suffering begin.

I can’t wait to see you hit the 250kg Squat. 9 reps are a bitch at the beginning, but if you’ve been doing 20 reps, then it should feel like a vacation to you. Best of luck, I will be following with interest!

Thank you Modi, I have regularly been squatting high reps with 190kg since February (2-4 times a week), this has doubled the amount of reps I can do at that weight, but haven’t done much for my 1RM strength.

So 9 reps should be like a vacation, especially at a lighter weight! But high reps are never easy. Thank you for the comment.

Smolov base meso cycle workout #1 June 1st 2009

(Weights in kilos)

SQ Style: Wide grip, narrow stance, paused at the bottom

50x10,90x10,110x10,130x2,155x9,155x9,155x9,155x9

Bench press:

50x5,80x2,90x1,110x1,120x1,130x1,135x1,97.5x6,97.5x6,97.5x6

Comment: Hot and humid weather. Low on energy. It was pretty
hard, and I was happy this was all there was today.

day #2 smolov base meso cycle

This should have been done yesterday,
but due to lack of sleep, I decided to
wait one day and do it today.

I did not feel like training today,
but when there is a program to be done,
I have to do it. The great God of squat
does not give anything for free.

SQ: 167.5x7x5
BP: 105x5x4
Fat-man chins: 10x3

I puked several times (after the second
set of squats, and in the end when I was
walking to the bathrom to empty the puke
bucket. Actually I used a frying pan for
a puke bucket, because that was the first
thing I found when the urge to puke came.

Glad to make it through, despite of puking,
shaking and a throbbing head-ache.

when you were squatting 190kg 4 times a week, were you looking for max reps per week?

and how many reps did you do training it 4 days per week?

training squat 4x per week for reps with 190kg is incredible!

Deadlifts are larger than life!

…Wait…

Good luck though dude, you’re a hell of a squatter.

stringer: I said 2-4 times a week, not regularily 4 times a week. I did that for a while, but it got too much, and I needed a week off. As the going get tougher, I went down to 3 and 2 times a week. It is hard to recover from all out high rep squats.

Most of the videos are to be found here:

The journey started with this video:

190kg x 8 reps (February 19, 2009):

And ended with 16 reps at 190kg (April 30, 2009):

I aborted the mission because I have a short term goal of hitting 250kg for a 1RM before the end of june. High reps does nothing for that. I will get back to the high reps later. In addition, I was exhausted from the high reps, as they are very demanding. A very busy schedule in real life did not help much, and it was hard to combine everything.

Rape Weight: Thanks!

This makes me smile. That is what you get for making my job of catching you harder

I’m not going to wish you luck, cause I know you don’t need it. I will, however, wish you good health, my friend. One day, we will share a squat rack and laugh (and puke).

Haha, thanks undesired! I will have to eat and sleep more, because if all sessions was as awful as this one, then I might as well start golfing.

Maybe, when you come to the States, we will squat one day and play a round of golf the next. See, I am already organizing your itinerary

Hehe. As long as we do squats first, and then have a solid meal! But after a grueling session of squats I am not sure if we can walk.

06th of june Day #3 of Smolov Base Meso Cycle

SQ: 7 sets of 5 reps @ 177.5kg
BP: 4 sets of 5 reps @ 112.5kg (last set was a miss, and it went 3+1)

Best workout so far on this program. Energy level was decent. I am content

7th of June 2009: Day #4 Smolov Base Meso Cycle

SQ: 190kg x 10 x 3
BP: 120kg x 4 x 3, 120kg x 6 (PR)
Inverted rows: 3 x 10

Some additional rotator cuff and rear delt work.

Comment: Turkey is power food! Always get some power when I eat this. Legs were a little bit tired from yesterday, and I got a minor strain in the upper back halfway through the squats, nothing serious. Felt good in the bench press, so decided to go for a new rep-PR on the last set (previous PR was 5 reps at 120kg). Good workout. Week one of smolov base meso cycle is completed, looking forward to the next week.

A couple of sets from today: 190kgx3 pause squat & 120kg x 6 bench press - YouTube

8th of June - Smolov Base Meso Cycle (day #5)

I am almost halfway!

SQ: 165kg x 9 x 4
BP: 102.5kg x 2 x 6, 102.5kg x 5+1 (missed the last rep)

To get back on schedule I decided to have no rest after the “penta and tripple”-days.
The two first sets today were pretty good. The third set was alarmingly heavy, and
the fourth set I barely made. But I made it, and that’s what matters. The mighty God
of squat punished me, and made me crawl on the floor after that last set. Now it is
important to rest and heal and eat a lot to be fresh for the workout the coming
wednesday. That is the workouts of 5 sets of sevens, and that is one of the hardest
workouts. Todays training was done early in the morning, and I am both proud and
satisfied today.

One more workout till you get to halfway! I envy you.

I envy myself too! Say, undesired, do you have a log here on T-Nation too? What’s it called? Sorry for asking and not searching myself, but I am just quickly in as I am preparing for my exam in computer arcitecture the coming thursday. I am sure you know some things about assembler programming, sequential circuits etc. since you are a computer professional yourself.

Halfway!

SQ: 177.5 x 7 x 5
BP: 110 x 5 x 4
Fatman chins: bw x 10 x 3

Went better than expected, and I just follow the program now, and 250 will be nailed in the end of this month!

Congratulations on the halfway mark - it seems (to me) like the second week is the hardest and you’re now halfway through it! Just kind of curious… are you planning on doing the intense mesocycle after this, or are you going back to doing those brutal 20 rep squats?
