Squats/Deadlifts Variations

Hey guys, I’m just curious on what kind of squats/deadlifts you do. I’ve seen people doing an invert squat at the gym, zercher squats and of course, the standard squat. I also see people doing the straight legged deadlift, and the standard deadlift. Could I get some responses on WHY you chose that certain exercise?

It’s mostly just personal preference, and what gets the job done. I like trap bar DLs, Front squats, and all of the single-leg variations.

They all target the muscles in different ways. In a given week I deadlift, straight leg deadlift, front squat, and ATG squat.

Man, I love leg day.

What’s an “ATG Squat”? I’ve been reading on zercher squats, but they seem really hard, and I’m not sure if I can squat as much as I can when I’m doing a zercher squat. And out of curiousty, how many times do you squat/deadlift in a week?

ATG stands for Ass-To-Grass, i.e. squatting down all the way until your hamstrings meet your calves. Actually getting your ass to touch grass would require rather tall grass, but I digress.

I usually workout 4 times a week, usually on a lower/upper-body split, so that’s 2 squat/deadlift/lunge workouts a week.

Box Squats- At parrellel 2" below and above. also with bands and chains.

I also love trap bar deadlifts, rack pulls, and sumo deadlifts.

Every 2 weeks I rotate a box squat with a deadlift on my ME Lower.

I am training for football and doing all of these has got my P-CHAIN strong as hell!

I’ve just started to squat again after nearly a year, due to a knee injury.

I learned about the goblet squat and I really love it. Though I don’t use a lot of weight yet.

Would someone be able to toss up a link or some pics for the goblet squat? I’ve done a couple searches on here and on google for it, but I am having trouble finding any good descriptions of it. I have heard its good for newbies, and I have my wife starting to work out with me very soon so want to start her out with stuff she can do.

I guess I will be doing box squats until I can do a proper squat, as well as sumo deadlifts.

Thanks for all the information guys!

Overhead squats. Brutal, especially in high reps.

I’ve never seen another exercise that made everything hurt like this one does…

Dude, there’s no mystery to it: Take a dumbell and hold it with both hands, in front of you, as if it were…[drumroll]…a goblet. Hold it close to your chest (if it’s heavy, they’ll be no other way). Now simply squat down, I would recommend all the way (ATG), and up again, pushing through the heels. And there you have it.

I also used it on my wife when she started working out with me a few weeks ago. It took her but 3 sessions to get perfect form; she’s never squatted, and is rehabbing an ACL op. Dan John says it’s the best way to learn squatting, and he recommends it for women especially.

Congratulations on getting your wife to join you in the gym. I find the experience very rewarding.
