You know what, if you want to do upright rows I think you can do them off the floor anyway, so yeah…don’t use the squat rack for them.
My thoughts exactly. Maybe I’m weird, but I can deadlift more than I can upright row so picking the weight up off the floor isn’t really an issue.
OK thats fair…I will do’em from the floor, FTR im not like the guy you mentioned.
Hold up whats weird about deadlifting more then Upright rowing, I have never seen anyone Upright Row 400 - 500lbs

It was a bit of a joke on my part (not at you but at people - squat rack curlers or rowers - in general). While typing it, I was thinking about a guy who was curling 135 in the only squat rack at my old gym (garage gym for me now :)) and he was going on about how it was a lot of weight so why should he move.
My thought was: Its a lot of weight to curl, I certainly can’t do it. But its also the same weight as my wife’s first warm up set when deadlifting. The point being, he could have been nice and moved back 10 feet and picked the weight up off the floor without much trouble, but instead was a dick and made us wait 15 minutes.
I guess my general thought is if you don’t NEED a piece of equimpment then be prepared to move for people that actually do need it. For instance, if there is a flat bench and an adjustable bench available and I’m doing flat DB bench, I’ll take the flat one leaving the one with more options free. If there is only an adjustable one available I’ll take that, but if a flat one becomes free later and someone asks about the adjustable, I’ll offer to move to the flat bench.
You must be Canadian because you sound so polite!
But really, you have very good gym etiquette. I’ve seen many times here where guys put their cell phone on top of their neatly folded towel on the bench next to them while they use another bench.

yeah o’boile is canadian, i know him IRL.

I was in the squat rack doing squats with admittedly only 95 pounds. A really tall, thin guy went into the rack next to me (my lovely gym only has 2). He loaded up one plate and started squatting doing sets of 5 but only about 1/8 of the way down. Seriously. Then he added a second plate and did more 1/8 squats. I was doing ATG (I’ve only been up to 115 on these but I’m currently working on focusing on them to make better progression). When he saw that I was doing them ATG he stopped doing them at the same time as me. When I’d complete a set and take a brief rest he’d step back in and do his. I was amused.
A male’s ego is a fragile thing lol
Agreed! And just so you know that I’m fair about it, same night there was a guy doing box jumps on the highest box the gym has. I was giving him my full attention as I walked through. When I walked back through he had put a platform under it so that it was easily another 6 or 8 inches taller. I seriously don’t know how he was able to jump that high. So I stopped and said, well now you’re just showing off! He had a huge smile on his face.
I almost slapped a cross-fitter with a plate today. I really, really try not to say anything to anyone else in the gym about lifting. I’m not that asshole. But there was a guy in the rack next to me doing front squats too. Or learning to, I guess, he had a friend with him, wearing a crossfit t-shirt. And, after he said he couldn’t lift anymore because his wrists hurt, I made the mistake of looking over and saying, “oh, you don’t have to hold it like that, you can cross your arms or fold your elbows forward like I do.”
Aaaand, his buddy snapped at me, “that’s not the point!”
Aaaand, like a fool, I said, “er…lifting more weight?”
And then he started talking much too fast and too loud about rotator cuffs and imbalances screwing up his clean and jerk.
I’m so glad there aren’t people like that at my gym, but I probably fill that requirement. Case in point, I added 10 pounds to the bar instead of just 5 while doing inclines and totally failed on rep 2 at 75 lbs and had to roll the bar down my body and let it rest on my legs until my husband came and lifted it off my lap. I would have been okay if I hadn’t put the clips on the bar or was doing flat bench.

We had a trainer doing some shadowing under me for a personal training position. He just got finished telling me how he worked at Goodlife for a few years, and how they are all idiots…
I had a woman doing lat pulldowns, and that’s when he asked, “Hey, these are good for your back right?”
I let it go and finished training my client. It was only later on when I brought up the fact that he is a moron that he said, "Well, I'm only used to getting people to do them behind the neck."

We had something similar happen recently. We went to the local GoodLife to squat for a change of scenery. There was a young guy squatting in the rack next to us. He went to 175lbs with decent form and depth. He left when he saw the skinny chick go to 275 (in suit bottoms). It was kind of funny but a bit sad. It’s too bad he didn’t carry on. No one was trying to make him feel bad. Maybe it just took the wind out of his sails.

What I don’t get is why that would discourage someone…I see someone better than me, and it motivates the hell outta me to get better myself…not make me feel like giving up…

Maybe it’s motivating when they see someone big like you doing more than them. Maybe it’s just imasculating when it’s a skinny middle aged woman who isn’t big or impressive looking. Regardless, it was too bad because, unlike all the partial squatters that were there that day, his looked really nice.

Same kind of guy that has a “Man Stamp”
Man Stamp - Definition: A Tatoo on a man that is located on the very lower back or upper ass area. A “Tramp Stamp” but for a man.
I’m not making this up, a manager at my former employer had one, and yes everyone laughed behind his back about it. I’m very proud to say that I coined the phrase.
