On the bright side, one girl was doing towel chins (one in each hand, short towels) with a full ROM for reps the same day.
That’s fucking badass. I’ve only once seen a girl in my gym doing unassisted bodyweight chinups, so I just had to compliment/encourage her.
Flex arm hang FTW!!

Actually, that shit’s hard!
Lol, yeah it’s an acquired skill. Thing is, any guy with 20 pullups could get a 100 on the flexed arm hang within 1-3 weeks. But many girls who have a flexed arm hang of 70 seconds can’t do a single pullup/chinup. Hmmm…lol.

Yeah, when I tried the flexed arm hang, even though could barely hit 8 pullups, I dropped like a rock, man.

My brother runs triathlons, and they have these guys they call “Firehawks,” guys with the slickest, most expensive gear but who suck at triathlons. They’re all over the gym, too–decked out in expensive compression gear, straps, wraps, belts, etc., just for the vanity of it. Or because they think it legitimizes them.

The worst firehawk I ever saw was this regular at my college gym. He was middle-aged, had a gut, always wore skintight compression shirts, and would come into the gym not with a backpack or duffel, but with–I swear–a metal briefcase, like something a spy would handcuff to his wrist. Inside the briefcase was a Manta Ray, lifting belt, straps, and knee pads (not wraps, pads like you’d wear tiling a kitchen floor). He would gear up and squat, only a few sets, and I never saw him go much above 200.

In the end he never bothered anyone so I chalk it up to eccentricity and don’t hold it against him. But damn. Knee pads.

New kid from last week, really mousey, 19 or so. Comes in and does bench first every day, doesn’t touch his chest, puts on too much weight. Last week I stopped and showed him the proper technique, ROM, etc. Told him to drop the weight to 95 and work his way up from there. Today I look over and he’s starting with 135, still doing the half reps, and not touching his chest. I finish a couple of sets and look over and see his legs flopping around as he’s stapled himself to the bench with 155…exactly the weight he stapled himself with last Thursday when I stopped to show him how to do it right. Glad I made such an impression.
That’s why i don’t even bother to correct anyone anymore unless they are endangering me.
