It throws off like 80% of people. (ofc that’s a statistically correct percentage)
If you haven’t squatted in front of a mirror, and then you are in a situation where you do, it fucks your brain, cause you know your squat by feel and when you see yourself, you start thinking that it doesn’t look as it feels, you start overthinking and BOOM your form is now shitty, cause you overdid it and your body has no idea why your mind is fucking with it.
Like several others have said, volume and frequency are key to upping your squat since your form is perfectly fine. The squat doesn’t tax the CNS nearly as much as say the deadlift and the knee and hip joints are more sturdy than the shoulders are on bench so you can train it a lot. Smolov is the extreme end of frequency and volume and meant for short peaking cycles but Up until the last couple grueling weeks I felt so great that to this day I squat at least 2x a week because once a week feels worse. Frequency is your friend with squats and let me ask this, what assistance template are you using on 531? Big but boring is great for getting more volume since a 5x10 at 60% max can be pretty tough afterward.
Ok so I made one change. Well 2, but one has made a huge difference. I put on my belt. I feel like a moron for not doing it myself a long time ago. But I’ve increased my squat by 15kg the last month. That kind of increase took me 6 months before.
I’ve started squatting without a mirror too. That takes some getting used too.
