Squat Confession

I always thought they said, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks!”

But I guess in MsM’s case, it’s not true! ;)
Who you calling old, ya dogg!

OP, I love reading Tate’s stuff but be careful. There is a difference between a raw squat and an equipped one and a big one.

Do you have anyone at your gym that can evaluate your form?

for me to get below parallel without my knees shaking i need a stance slightly wider than shoulder width and my feet pointed outwards about 30-40 degrees

Goblet squats.

Youtube that. Fastest way to create the mobility for serious squat depth, imo. After that, it’s just a short period of warming up with them and transfering the flexibility to front and backsquatting later in a workout.
QFT. I learned to squat for real with goblet squats.

PAIN!!!

i think i must have done my squats with a bit better form last night, i know i got down lower, because i am in pain, serious walking like ive shit my pants pain, and its great.

I cant wait to have this same feeling from real weights!!

I squat with a bench positioned just under me. As soon as my butt touches the seat, that is EXACTLY parallel for me.

Do not forget that you have to make sure your tailbone does NOT curve under you.

Every few weeks, I do Bulgarian split squats. I think I should start front squatting and OH squatting now…

Chucks? I squat barefoot, fools. And I fucking love it.

MsM,

I do an amazing milk crate impression.

You are lucky then! If I were much more tall, I’d have to use a 2 board to reach parallel.

Great idea for at home but most gyms don’t allow it. Definitely much more comfortable.

Bad, bad, bad. lol

actually I thought it was rather good, I was quite amused by this

PonceDeLeon i have considered squatting onto something but im not sure as to what as i have quite short legs so benches are too high, ill look around and see if there are some aerobic steps around that i can steal.

i also got myself some volleys on the weekend, flat soled sneakers, and i used them for mondays squat session, im not sure if they might have contributed to being able to get a bit lower.

i do know that om monday when i squatted although i still had balance problems i fle like i was driving more through my heals and i also didnt feel the same pain in my ankles that i had been over te last few weeks.

i have been doing bodyweight ATG squats each day im building up by 1 a day till i hit 100, then its pistols, as well as prying a few times a day as well.

while the squats do make me loose breath a little, im out of shape my gut presses against my thighs as i get below parallel, i dont consider them to be a muscle building activity more so an active recovery as well as an activity that will get my body used to moving correctly enabling me to do proper back squats to below parallel.

ok so here is a question that is possibly going to get me excommunicated but im gonna ask it anyway.

smith machine; is it worth using the smith while i get my balance right?

the reason i ask is because i really dont want to squash one of the many fuckwits using my gym who has an utter lack of respect and comes very close to bumping me while i try to squat.

my last rep is close to failure, im not perfectly blanced im concerned that if i stumble i will hurt someone.

will using the smith bugger me up so badly that its worth the risk of failing using the normal squats.

also with goblet squats, what is a good weight to use?

For me, I’ve had to unlearn more from the Smith Machine, than it’s actually worth.
If they are available, it might be intimidating the first few times, but get in a power cage, or a squat rack (remember, no curling ;^))
If the “Muscleheads” see that you’re not just dicking around they shouldn’t bust your balls too much.

Goblet squats rock! In my experience, a 53lb Kettlebell just feels perfect. (I’m 235 with a gut, but pretty good hip flexibility)

Dan John did a podcast that I’ve lost the link for, but it was all about teaching the squat & snatch. (Some kind soul might post the link though)

Thanks for that duck. the smith machine from what i can tell would limit my movements and also would limit development of supporting muscles as it would balance me.

we have a squat rack where we set up, but its too close to the incline bench and there is a plate tree near by and people dont seem to be able to wait that extra two seconds for me to finish before brushing past.
