Squat and Deadlift in the Same Day?

rippetoe’s program says it’s okay, but a lot of people i know says avoid doing it at all costs
should i just do it anyways

Go and try it out, if it really bothers you, then don’t do it again.

I think Mark Rippetoe knows what the hell he’s doing.

Just a though.

(Yes, do the program as written)

It doesn’t bother me.

maybe once I’m stressing my body with 600lb squats it will bother me.

You only have to do ONE set of deads once a week to improve on it. Do squats first. Mark Rippetoe says “Don’t be a pussy.”

Im on week 8 of Rippetoe and I haven’t found there to be a problem with squats and deads on the same day at the recommended volume. Im not lifting a ton either though, 245 squats and 375 deads right now. As mentioned, it might be a problem if those numbers were doubled.

I do em with my program…but it’s basically all I do for that day that is hard.

6x4 squats
5x5 deadlift

some calf work and abs.

x2

if I were doing both, heavy in the same session I would probably do something like.

-Front squat
-conv deadlift

or

-low box squat (so weight is <your free squat rep max)
-sumo deads

or

-backsquat
-RDL

some people can squat/dl heavy in the same session indeffinately. IIRC there was a discussion on IM about this. It isn’t for everyone, and some serious work capacity increasing would nequired for most people who plan on doing this with heavy ass weights. With a proper % scheme this can be extremely effective. See advanced 5x5 routines for an example.

fool, keep quiet. SS is not god.

i have found that if following a 5x5 style program because weight used isnt near 1rpm i’m fine to do both

Nothing wrong with doing both in the same day, as long as the volume for both of them isn’t high at the same time (ie–don’t do 5x5 for both in one day).

Don’t over think things. just work hard, it’ll all work out. When you get to the point where you’re squatting and pulling 500+, you can start to think about this sort of problem. Hell, a guy I train with squats 800 ish and still trains both the same day sometimes. He doesn’t do it geared, or all the time, but it can work.

I am currently doing Eric Cressey’s Maximum Strength program and he puts squats and deads on the same day in it.

Today was box squats with heavy weight and low volume and speed deadlifts with light weight, low reps, and a lot of sets.

Thursday is fronts squat and rack pulls.

you just need to balance it.
high volume/heavy squats- low volume/light deads and visa versa

It actually depends on what week you’re in. Sometimes you deadlift once in a week, sometimes twice.

I’ve gone through it several times. It is all doable for a while. There will obviously come a point when adding weight each workout will become difficult. This is when you may want to consider doing weekly increases. I stuck with 5 lb increments for a long time.
