Good job! Now go enjoy the post meet high and the beer.
Nice lifts! Can’t wait to hear a little more of the recap.
It was great to see ya lift – at least I caught one or two of them anyways! Nice Job…Keep at it and you will build on it from there.

Alright, so we got to Miami at around 11 pm Eastern time on Friday night. Got the bag, headed for the hotel. I’d called earlier in the day to warn them that we would be a late check in. They assured me it wouldn’t be a problem. We got to the hotel, and the only rooms left were smoking rooms. EWWW. I pitched a fit, and they were going to put us up in another hotel for the night until a non-stinky room opened up the next day. Hubby didn’t want to go find the other hotel, so we took the stinky room and got it for half price and a couple of free breakfasts (yeah, like I can eat your breakfast, bastards).
So, I slept horribly Friday night, I kept dreaming that hubby started smoking again. ICK.
Seriously, who smokes indoors anymore? Disgusting.
Anyway, we got moved into a much nicer room on Saturday (by nicer, I mean didn’t stink). I checked out the meet - very nice facilities - and got my equipment checked in for Sunday. I was annoyed because the IPF doesn’t allow us to wear our local gym T-shirt for competition, so I had to wear the meet shirt instead of Coach’s shirt.
We walked around by the waterfront for a couple of hours, and then went back to the room to watch movies. I took a couple of hot baths and was at 75.0 kg on the nose by 10pm when I went to bed. I got up at 5, took a bath instead of a shower, and weighed in at 74.4. Yes!
Peanut butter, jelly, and banana sandwiches, gatorade, water, Surge Workout Fuel™, more bananas, and a 30 minute nap, and I headed down to warm up for squats. I really didn’t do much in the way of warming up for squats, and I think that was a good thing for me. I squatted 3x135ish with a belt and my straps down, then went to singles around 200, 250 (straps up), and 275 (straps up knees wrapped). The warm up plates were in kilos so I was pretty confused the entire time.
The former chairman of the USAPL in Colorado was there, and he was kind enough to wrap my knees and help me out. It was a big stress off of both me and my husband. My first squat at 319 was three white lights. I struggled a bit through the suit/me transition, so I went to 349 for my second attempt instead of 352-ish. 349 stalled for what felt like 30 minutes, but I got it, three white. I used the THPs on that attempt and they really felt great.
I think my third squat was 363 ish, and it was a one way trip to the basement. I hit the hole, and there was no way I was coming back up.
Benching, my opener was 187, which I hit with some swimming backstage for warmups. I hit it for my first attempt, but the lift was no good due to some dipping/kayaking. Second attempt, 187, with the USAPL guy helping tweak my shirt, and it was easy good. Third attempt was 198. It was awesome. I learned new tricks for setting the shirt and tweaking it for different attempts.
Let’s just say hubby rather enjoyed the “tweak” where he put his hands down the front of the shirt to pull my boobs up higher.
Deadlifting - opened with 336, my second attempt from last meet. It was heavy but good. I could feel my shoulders rounding on this rep and knew I had to keep them tighter for the next attempt. I moved up to 350 something. It broke an inch or two off the floor and stalled. Shoulders collapsed again. I tried it again for the third attempt, got it a couple inches higher, and after another half hour of struggle, gave it up. I set the bar down and was wiped enough I fell over backwards. Then Malinda hugged me and told me it was alright. I was just thrilled to have finished - and not bombed!
Great meet. I had loads of fun, and I was happy with a 400 kg total given the circumstances. I was super stressed out at the beginning because Coach wasn’t there, I was scared about timing, I didn’t know what to tell hubby re: timing, etc. After I made the first squat, things fell more into place.
I watched Priscilla Ribic squeeze into squat and deadlift suits that were WAY smaller than my Metal suit. I think I need to go down another size.
And I also need to quit complaining about my big ass and thighs. I have NOTHING compared to some of these women (and yes, hubby loved that part too!).
Unfortunately, I didn’t get any pictures or video because hubby was backstage helping out. We decided that next Nationals, we will fly out Coach and his wife so that Coach and I can do the competing and Coach’s wife and hubby can do the drinking.
My next meet will be in May. Right now, I have my brother in law and his girlfriend coming into town, so it will be a week off of any significant training or clean eating. After that, I will take two months for a cut so I will be training at competition weight. I can’t do this cutting bullshit anymore, and hubby wants to work out with me more and needs some motivation.
During the two months, in addition to HIIT and eating clean, I will train the big three lifts, raw, and just work on the fundamentals for a while. We’ll see where I end up…
Oh, and the whole meet was about 2.5 hours. My flight was seven lifters. I hardly had time to catch my breath. I am VERY glad that coach and I had trained all three lifts in our morning sessions over the past few weeks.
Congrats on your meet. I’m enjoying learning about this whole powerlifting scene. It seems really fun.
Sounds like an absolute blast! I hear you on training at comp weight…except I’m not doing that just yet lol.
Hopefully I’ll be joining you and Malinda at Nationals next year!! I’ll have Coach Bartl helping me out who will be well-trained in wraps and suits by then ![]()

I enjoyed reading about your adventures!! Good work! ![]()
Is the meet in May the one in VA, or is that July? Either way, I’d love to come down and check it out!

The meet Firebug referred to is the next Women’s Nationals, which I think is in Ohio in May 2010?
July 2009 is Raw Nationals in Charlottesville.
mom-in-MD, if you can find a USAPL meet to do before July, you can come compete at Raw Nationals with me. Come to the dark side!
Haha, yer funny!
That’s not a lot of time!!
tempting though…

you think so? I don’t know, I’ve been in my own world trying to get my weight down…I don’t even know HOW to train for a meet! LOL!!
Not to hijack, but I guess I am,but do any of you gals have bad knees? Meaning arthritis, etc…I just got a generic diagnosis today until I get my xrays back, and I was given a list of crap not to do…
