Sore Traps and Front Squats

I woke up this morning with stiff upper traps, not to mention something else, and realized that I am might be doing something wrong when doing my front squats. Is it unusual to have DOMS in you upper traps from supporting the bar in front of you after doing front squats? I should probably mention that as soon as I am done my squats I continue with calf raises with the bar in the same position to commplete a set.

My delts have been sore from the bar resting on them, but I don’t recall my traps ever feeling fatigued.

If you are new to this exercise i can imagine it is due to the apprehension of having that amount of weight in such an awkward position, causing you to elevate your shoulder girdle - shrug your shoulders. Try and use less weight, keep chest up and shoulders down… just to get the form and feel comfortable.

Might help…

maybe your traps are weak.

This could quite well be the case. I am more inclined to think it is the extra stress created from doing the calf raises during my last 2 sets when I use closer to my 3RM and already near exhaustion from the acutal squats.

I think it was Poliquin who said to never do more than 6 reps for the front squat because of the isometric contraction of the rhomboids, how they will fatigue past this point and you will have a kyphotic posture. Not sure if this helps but im guessing they are just giving out when you go to do your calf raises.
