Some Heavybag Session

ok i know i have alot to fix etc, im just getting back into it… 2nd heavy bag session in 3 years heh.

just posting up vids… i did 15 rounds on the bag yesterday, i dno man i cant stop hitting it until i am dead… i love hitting the bag… i want to get back in the ring, but not just sparring, official, eventually.

i’ve got a ‘free week’ at American top team, but man, south florida (broward) fucking sucks for boxing gyms… everything is insanely expensive with contracts and all this stupid shit…

I’m looking to go to the gym 1x/week because of my current situation, trying to get them to give me a deal, i could get alot of work in on that one day… i do lots of sprint/shadow boxing/basketball stuff/bodyweight stuff on the nights, so it’d work perfect.

here’s rounds 1,2,3:

here’s rounds 4,5,7:

alright, peace.

You actually look pretty good man. You’re telegraphin your jab by pumping before you throw it, so watch that, but your footwork looks solid and you’re hitting pretty well. You turn over your right hand nicely and I like that you hook off the jab. You look like you fight pretty well out of the shell, and your pivots and movement look good too. Like that double hook as well.

Just fix that jab, because the more tired you get, the more blatant it gets. If a cat times you right you’re gonna be hurtin on that.

thanks alot man for the comment… and ya, i’ve noticed that too about the jab, definitely have to fix that.

For next session, monday, I want to fix a few things:

  • fix the jab issue, by either not pumping it prior to throwing, and/or by having a nice arm sway in my shell and fire it from whatever position it’s in… i used to do that alot and I think that’s what i’m missing.

  • stop just walking away from the bag in a non-fighting type of position… one reason i do this is because im looking at my camera, worried about someone stealing it… but i got to stay in my shell or in position when i do stuff like that, bad habit to create.

  • more double jabs and double jab + combos, occasional triple jabs

  • more combos…

peace!

i just curious, how did you record it?

nice form man, just stop telegraphing the jab as told above.

Just remember: don’t worry about your camera when fighting on the ring otherwise you can get KTFO =)

thanks man, ya im going to fix that.

i put the camcorder on the ring, even though there were some pro boxer dudes in there doing mitt work, they werent touching the ropes, they were staying pretty much in the middle of the ring doing “mayweather mitt work”… so i put it on the edge near the steps. :F

peace man

Actually i’m curious about the handycam itself, i’m looking the buy one and the quality of your image seems top sharp. Do you recommend any REALLY portable very light with 720p HD handycam?

Boxing gyms: You’re going to “boxing” gyms, not boxing gyms. If you go to a PAL gym and tell them you’d just like to come in once a week they’d probably work something out with you and let workout for free. Regardless, they’d charge you probably a 25% of what most gyms you’re looking at are charging[if they even charge you]. If you’re 18 or under they’ll let you come in for free.

what is a PAL gym?

i heard those flip cams are nice, the HD one’s, but honestly im not sure, i have a canon hv30. it’s a traditional camcorder, slightly bulky… it’s one of the best hd cams you can get though for the price ($600 on amazon), or at least it was when i bought it.

HD cams are going pretty cheap now days though so…

ya unfortunately their are no PAL’s for “tamarac” or “coral springs”… the only PAL’s i know of are both 30 miles from me in opposite directions, pembroke pines and boca raton, and both of them say you have to reside in that city… the boca raton one says you have to be under 18.

broward is trash for boxing, it’s all mma mcdojo’s now.

bleh

I liked it. Keep it up bro.

I’ve never boxed, but I will be starting on Wednesday nights next week after BJJ class. Anyway I might sound like a complete moron, but aren’t your hands a bit low. I always thought even when just shadow boxing/hitting the heavy bag you should be keeping your hands up??

Also is that the typical pace of a normal heavy bag session for everyone here? I do hit the bag on occasion and am usually pretty exhausted especially my shoulders, but I also hit the bag a hell of a lot more during each round. Usually do (5) 2 minute rounds.

He’s got his hands low because he fights out of a kind of Philly shell, which has your lead arm over your ribs and liver and your back hand up, and uses the shoulder roll and the shoulder itself to block punches. You’ve got to be quick to pull it off, and most of the guys who use it are pure boxers.

Depends on the kind of fighter you are. I throw more punches too, but not everyone does. Just a personal preference.

Okay that makes sense.

Thanks,

well i do need to bring it up higher more often but, i usually have it low like that when im in my punching range, which usually means im ‘safe’ in terms of reach advantage, as i can easily put that arm in and shoulder roll/shell up and defend.

how many punches do you do? I go anywhere from 80-100 punches per round, for 15 rounds… people keep mentioning my work rate being low but i’m a bit confused on it.

If you are hitting the bag a hell of alot more than me, per 3 minutes, then chances are you are accumulating way too much lactic acid to throw punches with full speed/power, it’s just how energy systems work… In a sparring match i’d throw < 50 punches per round for sure, as my style usually slows the pace down bigtime, so i’m pretty far over my normal work rate when i hit the bag.

i don’t know about this, as i throw a lot of power, for a lot of punches/kicks… but i tend to throw it all at about 85% (or 86%, i dunno) percent power, all the time…it’s almost like i forgot how to throw 100% power.

i do like your point about throw more punches when working the bag vs sparring, as i think this is THE reason why a lot of fighters gas anymore. they’re in shape, but they don’t train at a high enough pace to prep for their fights…

oh well, just my opinion. your defense and movement looks nice and loose, especially for somebody just getting back into training…keep it up!

Nice job man. You look very fluid. Nice and relaxed, good crisp punches. You like like you got some fast hands. The gym I lift at now has a heavy bag, so I’ll hit it on my non-lifting days just for a workout. Do you have any set guidelines for your sessions? Or do you just kind of throw whatever you want for timed rounds?
