I am a soccer player and am looking for some training ideas for the off-season to prepare for the coming season. I want to focus on power and endurance. Power to help with explosiveness, quickness, and strength (on and off the ball) and endurance to allow me to play longer at a higher intensity level. Can anyone recommend a training routine geared toward these kinds of results? It doesn’t have to be a detailed plan, but even some general concepts would be helpful. I was thinking twice a week on the weights with stuff like power cleans, power snatches, chins, deadlifts, and standing military presses. Then 2-3 sessions a week of cardio focusing on high intensity interval training like the 400m interval sprints I read about in t-mag. Any soccer players out there who wouldn’t mind sharing their routine and/or some advice?
Hey,
Other people do ofer suggestions but also state that your best bet is to contact Coach Davies.
Also if it comes up often, perhaps a search should be tried.
Peace,
T-Ren
First a few questions:
What position do you play?
How much time do you have until season?
How old are you (or what level of play are you playing at currently: high school, college, other)?
I did do a search but like Kieran indicated there are only some minor hints and then an instruction to buy Coach Davies soccer programs. At over $100 US each I can’t afford that, heh.
To DHolt:
I usually play in the midfield or sweeper, however I also play striker and keeper on occasion, but mostly central midfield. (I’m kind of a swiss army knife player, heh).
The season won’t start until May 2004, although we’ll probably start team training in February or March.
I’m 26 years old and have over 10 years of soccer experience at a high level. I did take about 5 years off when I was about 18, but have played the last 3 years. The break is the reason my fitness level has dropped and I want to raise it.
