So I Bought a Bed for Hot Sleepers & Recovery

Current Training Log (a la Thibbs Metcon for Muscle)

For those of you that keep up with my training logs, you’ve probably noticed I sleep terribly, and rarely see 8 hours. For those of you who haven’t been keeping up with my logs, a little background:

I work a stressful full-time job, attend college full time, have 2 hours commute daily, train 3-5x per week and have a wife and daughter at home. I’ve got ADHD, which is linked to multiple sleep issues, and Obstructive Sleep Apnea - neither of which lead to quality sleep… Most nights I wake up feeling hungover despite not being a drinker.

I’m a hot sleeper… like really hot sleeper. Cold showers before bed, thermostat set to 68 degrees, 2 fans on full blast, sleeping under a sheet only, ice water by the bedside - and I still sweat through sheets.

A few weeks ago I was watching a Mat Fraser (5x CrossFit Games champion) interview and was listening to what he does to recover. Of the many things listed, he mentioned a cooling bed topper; this piqued my interest. Some hours of research later, I had found 2 good options - the ChiliSleep system and Eight Sleep.

After doing even more research, I found that most of the ChiliSleep complaints were that it was unable to maintain cooler temperatures and a lack of features. Meanwhile the Eight Sleep had very few, if any, complaints. I had initially written off the Eight Sleep unit as it was very expensive by comparison, but the more I read into it, the more I was sold on it.

So I bought the Eight Sleep unit and king sized mattress.

Cooling Topper Review:
I’ve been sleeping on this for just over a week now and have had zero nights where I sweated through sheets.

This unit tracks sleep patterns, Heart Rate Variability (HRV, a recovery metric), Heart rate, breathing rate, and sleep stages. It creates a profile of you and your sleep to adjust the temperature of the bed according to your sleep patterns and sleep stages - it also uses metrics listed above to gauge the quality of your sleep using a “Sleep Fitness Score”.
All of these things, I like. If you have a smart home (I don’t), you can link this with your home unit as well - but I won’t comment on this as I haven’t used these features.

The last week or so has been some of the best sleep I’ve had in a long time. As someone who never sleeps well, is a hot mess overnight, and is a bit too busy throughout the day, I’ll give this bed a 10/10. If you’re a hot sleeper like me, or even a cold one (the bed can be heated), I strongly recommend this bed.

Oh, and yes it has individual bed side control (and you can also “kick” the other partner off the bed lol).

This is very interesting and looks badass. I might have to buy me one.

On a completely unrelated note, I didn’t realize you were a manlet.

Well, there’s a weight limit to the bed (like 230lb per side or something) but the topper is where all the magic happens anyways. For you, I’d just look into the topper.

Don’t worry, I’m bigger in person

Yeah, my fatass far surpasses that.

That’s what she said.

I reject this. 5’9" is average in the US.

First they came for the 5’5" guys saying they were manlets and I didn’t do anything because I am 5’10", then they came for the 5’7" guys…

I have actually looked at cooling bed products. I am often hot at least starting out. From my research, I came to the same conclusion. The Eight Sleep is the better product, but you pay for it.

Both of these statements are true

5’10" is now also a manlet.

Sorry bro, I don’t make the rules.

I guess at 5’10" and a quarter, I am king of manlet.

I would rather be on the cusp of ‘manletism’ if I had a choice. I’m most assuredly a manlet… damn you all.

How does your wife like it? I have to ask this because women tend to not sleep as hot as their manlets. For the record, you’re about the same height as my hubby.

That is part of the problem. My wife will snuggle up next to me to warm up and I am already too hot.

Solution, an extra blanket on her side of the bed.

My wife loves to make our room freezing cold then take all of the blankets and bundle them around herself. I don’t understand it… logically it makes no sense.

I wonder if it has something to do with the weight or pressure of the blankets. You feel swaddled like a baby, but you’re not overheated because the room is so cool.

You may be on to something!

A pet might help her too. My furry guy (dog, not husband) will either lay on top of my legs/feet or smash his body right up against me all night. He’s a living furnace. This is fine in the winter, but not great on a hot night.

Shes a furnace who still sleeps under winter blankets in the summer lol.

She likes it because she can turn the temperature up at night  said she has no complaints though lol.

This sounds like a win!

So you can have two separate temps for the two sides of the bed?
