Smolov Experiment

So i’m at home with a good gym for a month on college break. Because of a rugby injury i can’t do any benching or pressing exercises. I can however do pretty much everything else. The plan is to do a smolov cycle for front squats with a few other exercises in there.

I have a shit ton of supplements: Beta-alanine, Flameout, creatine, Grow! Whey, and 6 tubs of rootbeer Surge. Going to try double dosing Surge and eat my face off. Should be fun, will keep track of how it goes on here.

One workout down… i forgot how much i hate 4x9

You should post your workouts so we can watch you suffer.

.

Post as in post videos of my workouts?

What other shit do you plan on doing. Do you plan on using multiple training sessions like session 1: squat, session 2: extra work… or just do all the shit at once.

oh. and fyi, eating might be great for recovery and probably getting your legs a lot bigger… but if you’re trying to stay in a weight class might want to work on limiting that a bit

I am not a pl’er or ol’er though so take that with a grain of salt.

Should be able to record workouts. Xen, I was originally thinking one workout, but i’m always dead after the squatting. So either seperate sessions or just do a couple things before squats. As far as weight class goes, I play rugby and am always way light for my position so no worries there.

I would try to do separate sessions bro. Dedicate EVERYTHING you have to the squats. I like how stallion does it. Nothing but squats for that month.

I’ve been researching this for a little while. I might have some time off so I think im going to try it… articles you might find interesting.

I do some more lifts than squats. Previously I have done only squats. I think it is important to see the whole picture, so I workout the hamstrings with Nordic Hamstrings (no stress on lower back) twice a week, and then I also work the upper body with pressing movements and pulling movements at least twice a week. But doing nothing but squats also works. However the cornerstone is the squat. I did the 7 set 5 reps workout yesterday in the third week of the smolov base meso cycle, and then today there is the 10 set 3 reps workout…

Good luck Tstud_9! Make sure to eat a lot and rest well. When you do the heavy sets, make sure to have long enough breaks.

I would post the weights used that day and a video of any grueling sets. Or if you are doing something like 9 sets, post a video of the first set and last set to compare speed/technique.

Sounds good modi.

First day was 4x9 at 160lbs. Just read over the logs xen linked, and agree that forward lean/being choked by the bar are the biggest difficulties. Hit all sets/reps though the last rep in last set was rough.

Only thing that may get in the way is drinking, but I drank during last smolov cycle so i think i’ll be alright.

What position do you play?

Second row, flank when needed. Pretty much anywhere besides the front row.

That’s where I started, back in '90. Played a little 8-man as well in the army. I was curious when you said you were way light for your position. That was the same crap people used to give me, and the biggest reason I never got my shot with the Eagles. But, just because you are lighter, doesnt mean you can’t hit harder or hold your own on the pitch.I will be watching your log, good luck!

Damn right!

@Tstud_9 - I didn’t understand, are you going only for the base mesocycle, or you have some suicidal tendencies going and will be doing the full-holy-grail-of-squat Smolov?

Either way, good luck.

Keep in mind that the Smolov veterans, like stalion, hang buckets on the bar, so even if they fall of exhaustion after the last set, they can vomit there, without making a mess

Thanks for the encouragement guys. undesired, I hear ya man our pack is fairly smaller than most, but we’re faster and usually leave a trail of bodies on the pitch.

mldj, I’m not sure at the moment whether or not i’ll do the intense phase yet. After the base mesocycle i’ll decide. Biggest deciding factor will be how soon I start practicing. I have done the base mesocycle for back squats once before, but the buckets seem like a good idea haha.

Finished my second workout today. No videos for this session, but I will record the 7x5 tuesday. Did 5x7 today with 170. Workout went great, form held up well even through the last set which wasn’t that difficult, for smolov that is.

Still early, but I feel the double dosing of Surge and other supplements are really helping. Normally I limp out of my weightroom after the session, but today wasn’t bad at all. Will do some weighted chins, and maybe some rack pulls tommorow.

To put things in perspective, after some shenanigans last night I went to bed at 6am and slept till 3:30 p.m. . Spent the day re hydrating/eating. Bodyweight went up 4-5lbs from after I woke up and ate, and when I did my workout so I was definitely quite dehydrated.
