the advice for a self inflicted illness would be the same as for a regular illness: do what you can.
source: Jodie Marsh ditched old lifestyle to become champion bodybuilder - ESPN The Magazine
Currently, sheās in the dieting phase of training: For 10 weeks, she consumes as little food as possible to lose fat. That explains why she looks smaller now than she will during competition. Her daily meals, precooked and packed neatly into a Harley-Davidson bag, are pretty much always the same: 30 grams of oatmeal and a protein shake for breakfast; 25 grams of brown rice and a protein shake three times during the afternoon; and three whole eggs for dinner.
āYou get bored of it,ā she says, grimacing. Before bed, she has a casein shake, which is supposed to release protein into her system as she sleeps. Throughout the day, she drinks four liters of water. āWhen you drink that much, itās not like a normal pee,ā she says. āIt comes out like a flood.ā And to break things up, she smokes Marlboro Golds, though she calls the habit disgusting. āLoads of bodybuilders smoke because we canāt eat much,ā she says. āWeāre hungry, so we say, āI guess Iāll have a cigarette. Iāve got to have something.āā
look man, as said, i smoked a pack + per day for a decadeā¦i smoked cause i loved itā¦eventually i realized despite enjoying a smoke, mind you a played semi-pro 9 ball @ the time, gambled a ton, drank a bit of whiskeyā¦the point is i get it, stress to do what you like - makes you do what you like - SMOKE, i smoked a ton, everyday, i get it.
Still though, FUCKING QUIT.
Itās doable. all things are doable once you believe you can do them (most things), the point is youāll quit when you decide to. it will fucking kill you, it will decrease your gains in the gym, you are not operating @ anywhere near 100% if smoking and training.
i buried my dad @ 19 - cancer, my mom @ 27 - cancer. you will eventually fucking die a horrible death from cancer (most likely) if you continue to smoke. now some folks smoke for decades and never get cancer, other folks never smoke and get riddled w/ cancer. itās not straight forward.
maybe lifting isnāt for you though. perhaps being a coffee house hipster is more the speed you want, coffee and cigarettes and talk about whatās new in indie rock.
i remember catching a bj years ago from a smoker, i use to date/bang smokers weād fuck and then smoke, have some wine and fuck moreā¦mmmm fun
anyways, later that day i got a bj from another girl, non-smoker, she told me cock tasted like an ashtrayā¦weird right. manā¦i could go for a smoke and a bj right now.
OP- youāre gonna die

Iām not sure of your stance.
If you enjoy smoking: smoke. Some telling you to quit while also portraying themselves as the most bad ass partying smokers ever is beyond me.
I smoke on occasion, and with cardio, sun, lifting, continuing to eat right its just fine. Nicotine is a nice little stimulant. Though, Iām also not a champion bodybuilder. Good luck in your goals. Donāt adjust your training or it isā¦a negative habit.
no a smoker shouldnāt train any differently than a non smoker.
i use to smoke half a pack to a pack a day especially in the Army. Some time in 2011 while i was deployed though I got sick of the guilty feeling I had after every smoke and they just started tasting bad.
You can quit. Iād venture to say there is an overwhelmingly large number of smokers compared to non smokers in the military so I wouldnāt use your environment as an excuse. Bodybuilding is all about being mentally strong. The days you want to skip a meal or eat some delicious McGreaseburger or miss a workout will happen way more often than you will want to do the right thing. Are you just going to use some shit excuse like i like being fat and lazy or all my friends are fat and lazy? Itās weakness. Youāre weak. You can decide to make baby steps towards being strong if you want. Or not I dont care.
It depends how much you smoke. 2 to 3 fags a day probably wonāt do you any harm - its just such a minimal amount of smoke. Just as only smoking when you go out to party.
Smoking 20 a day probably wonāt help anything though.

Smoking is good, but everyone is different. Others get fucked up with smoke, it actually has helped my asthma.
I loved the āI smoke because my family smokesā rationale. Years from now you can all sit around passing a cig between your tracheal stomas to keep that family bonding going.

You can have a good physique and smoke. You can have an even better physique if you donāt.
Nicotine is a mild stimulant, so it has the beneficial properties of a stimulant in terms of bodybuilding.
It is more useful for āUnnaturalā bobybuilders because it is an anti-estrogenic. Yes, this is true.
If you canāt leave the ācigsā then start using nicotine in other delivery forms so you donāt affect your cardiovascular system which WILL be detrimental specially if your workouts are more āclassicalā.
If you smoke because you are addicted to the act of smoking or anxiety, cannabis has more benefits for bodybuilding: better sleep, better appetite (2/3 In the Weightlifting recovery department).
You also get a different perspective on the whole weightlifting world and get some pretty nice conclusions, but that is debatable of course.
And I donāt know how many you smoke per day so I donāt know if itās too much for the sympathetic system and respiratory system (and every system honestly but letās be concise) in order for you to need more recovery because of smoking, but probably not.

The question demonstrates ignorance, but YOUR POST is the stupid reply.
Do not compare smoking cigarretes with eating McDonalds every day (completely different effects on bodybuilding [Health aside].
To the orginal poster: Yes, you are welcome, just read some more science on your own.
the bird: You canāt be a hypocrite and reject him for his addiction. We weightlifters have at least one addiction: lifting heavy iron every day. You know that terrible feeling on days when you canāt lift? Welcome to abstinence.
On top of that, since we are extremists, a lot of us have tried several drugs, frecuently including the sex addiction and being promiscuous. Yes, this is Testosterone Nation.

If youāre doing it for the stimulation then switch to coffee. We iron addicts love that black water and you wonāt get shit from everybody on the forums for using that drug.
And now mentioning the health part: Smoking tobacco is detrimental to EVERY system (cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary, digestive, etc.) Of course the damage will be determined by the amount you smoke and your gene regeneration and mediation capabilities.
In my opinion, the benefits of smoking are not worth the risks. By far.
I own a hookah and use it once every two weeks max. Nicotine is actually great on a cut because it reduces your appetite. Regardless tobacco is nasty and you can do better things to control appetite.
same goes with smoking cannabis on a bulkā¦it helps appetite but there are other things you can do to get the cals down easy lol

Just googled āhookahā. Looks awesome.
Nicotine is not just good for cutting because of the appetite suppression but because of its anti-estrogenic activity and the catecolamine release it causes.
But like you said, it is by far not worth it.
What other methods would you recommend me for increaing appetite?
Cheers,
Carlos
Iām a lanky dude and am busy with med school as well so itās tough to get the cals in. For me it helped to salt the shit out of my food (apparently I have high BP now so I stopped), grease the shit out of my food - cook everything in a lot of your fat source, then pour lots of EVOO on top of foods. You can get a ton of calories in by making a panful of rice/potatoes with some veggies and maybe cheese/eggs every night before bed. I douse it in EVOO after its done cooking. Pizza soaked in EVOO also leads to PRs
all this lead to my Rachel Ray fetish. I know shes ugly and annoying, but I canāt help itā¦

Very glad to read from a future colleague. Just graduated after 8 years of med-school this year.
-Your salt solution cracked me up.
-Have you determined why you have high blood pressure? (How many years of med-school have you taken?)
-EVOO seems a good idea but I donāt have that here. Something similar is to pour olive oil on your rice to add beneficial calories.
-Iām gonna have to check out that Rachael Ray stuff soon since Iām moving to the U.S. in a couple of months. Yes, at last I will be able to buy Testosterone Nation supplements comfortably and with reliability.

This. I mean, why ANYONE would pick up one to start, granted I guess it almost always starts in adolescents when you just donāt give an F about your future or think about the consequences.

Probably a big reason I never smoked, is because my family smoked. Nasty shit⦠also, I remember in 3rd grade seeing a set of black lungs and from then on hounded my parents to stop. They never did. Along with poor lifestyle both have had heart attacks.
