Yes, all of you guys jump 40". You all also could jump 70 when you were 18.
T-Nation is full of idiots, I don’t know why you’re arguing darq, obviously if you don’t train for something like running a marathon or squatting 1000 poundz then you just aren’t training. Jumping is the single best measure of athletic ability and since someone wants to train to make it higher they’re stupid.
check the pics homie… maybe thats why you’re upset… that some completely genetic fucking mess such as myself could jump higher than you off a run… im not bragging, i just dislike you, so im just taking a nice warm dump on your face.
cya later dipshit.
you can barely jump higher than me now at age 44 and 260. what makes you think you could jump higher than me when i was 25 and 185? LOL. you can’t play (admittedly) and your dunks are far from spectacular. and you think i’m upset? you’re not that important. you look like a goof ball and the socks…LOL. shooting the vid in high def is hilarious. you’re at a playground, doing a pedestrian dunk. i dislike you too and you’re only dumping on the internet - that makes you common…pedestrian, nothing special - like that dunk. in fact, the best part of that dunk was the high def aspect of it. me thinks you think too much of yourself.
post vid or shut up.

I took a shit about an hour ago but I didn’t film it. That exactly approximates how important how high I could jump then, or now, means to me. And my shit an hour ago was pretty satisfying and was one of the largest ones I have taken in the last week. What does that mean? Let me tell you. It means I am more impressed with that shit today than I am with your pedestrian dunk attempts. It’s pretty fucking meaningless. It only has meaning to you. What’s next, Oliver Stone filming you jumping over a tricycle? Some of us peacock, some of us just do the damn thing. Like I said, me thinks you are mightily impressed with yourself. You’re about 8 inches over the rim or so. I can wake up in the middle of the night drunk and grab the rim. It aint impressive dude and aint worth the memory space. I asked a serious question - It was about random dunking vids. Not about you. I congratulate you on your progress.

I wasn’t implying this. I’m all for the vert as a measure of athleticism - along with standing broad jump. I’m all for improving it, along with other measures of athleticism. My original question was with regard to random dunk vids. As a former player, I do not understand it. I wasn’t hating on his progress.
45" is a good goal. That way you will be sure to hit 40", my question to you is have you looked at your film and determined your current “inefficiencies”, rooms for improvement, etc?

im not impressed with myself, im proud of myself… all i do is dunk why would that make me impressed with myself?
anyway, in one of your original posts you mentioned: “the highest guys were getting was 37-39 inches” or something like that… never did you say you actually jumped high.

ok if you weren’t hating / being disrespectful (which to me it looks like you were, and to others) then lets all just hug it out and shut the fuck up.

Translation I’m a bitter guy I like putting people down to help me feel better about my short comings in life. Lol I can dunk shoot and play defence. I would say kids have gotten better. I don’t work on my vert so I can finish really high on the backboard lets get real here. You work on your vert so you can throw down on fools. I dunno why I’m wasting my time though you make some big claims but i don’t see you posting any dunk videos. Your just some old guy “back in my day.”
i got a homework assignment for you einstein since you claim to be a player. next game you watch, tally the times someone “threw down on some fool” in a game v. all the other points scored. report back to me and tell me how critical it was. i’m only 44. i’m not bitter at all. i had a nice time playing, lots of good experiences, made some money overseas. wish i made it to the big show but i didn’t. most will never get the chance to try (you won’t lol so who is bitter). basketball was my life until i was 29 (when by the way your avatars father at age 41 was my summer league teamate). basketball is over for me for quite some time. i have many interests. i barely watch the sport any longer. i just don’t understand the solo random dunk vids and I said so. simple. but feel free to swing from his nuts as you see fit while beating your bony chest over the internet. it’s a great look for you! ;)[/quote]

I fluctuated anywhere from between 38-40 depending on my training state. I played ALOT of ball and lifted too. I was probably very over-trained much of the time. There were about four guys out of that camp up in that range, the highest of which was another white guy like me named Johnny Cleveland who if I remember correctly was out of u of alaska or something. 6.4 white kid who I watched jump over someone in one of the games and dunk. Kid had crazy stupid ridiculous hops. Other guy I remember was a black guy, not much of a player, didn’t make the league, but he had some springs. Everyone else, even the guys you would have thought were hi fliers and appeared to be in games - the guys 6.6 who you thought could really hop were testing around 32. It was around the time of these tests that guys that listed their height at 6.8 became 6.6 and so forth. When I was in the 6th grade I was at 28". Don’t know where that placed me genetic wise. One of my best friends and classmates (two grades ahead) was an olympic level high jumper. It wasn’t until he went to U of Nebraska that I started to pick up some training tips like plyos. I prolly overtrained them though.

we don’t need to hug. i wasn’t hating. i just don’t understand the vids as a former player - from my background, i don’t “get it”. that’s not hate. no one i ever knew made a dunk video and i’ve been acquainted with guys that could do some amazing shit. for us, it’s the game. and if we dunk, the only ones that count are in the game in traffic. if i’m hating, i’m hating on those types of vids - not yours in particular. if you were jumping/testing your vert on some device, i get it. i get training your vert. i just don’t get the random dunking. wasn’t directed at you, the internet is and has been for quite some time loaded with those vids and i think i’ve commented on tnation in the past. frankly i hope you reach your goals. i have no vested interest to see you succeed or fail. i’ve gone from a sport (basketball) where i wanted to destroy my opponent to a sport (powerlifting) where i don’t hesitate to cheer and encourage my fellow competitor. no hate here dude. i’m pretty fucking impressed with myself to hate anyone else. i hope you put your fucking arm thru the rim - that would be a vid i’d want to see.
im not impressed with myself, im proud of myself… all i do is dunk why would that make me impressed with myself?

28" off the run in 6th grade would put you well above average… i’ve trained tons of kids, never tested running vert, only standing, and in 6th grade the average is around 13-14" or so… i forget the exact stats, i have them somewhere in excel on another computer.
The internet is RIDDLED with ridiculous ‘internet badasses’ it’s a JOKE.
I saw this insane drift video the other day and on this car forum people were commenting how club level racers could do it…yeah SURE…thats why they are club level racers and they aren’t racing in drift leagues etc and making big £££! People love to belittle others complishments.

all my numbers are standing. the 28 was standing with a jab step. the 38-40 were always jab step or one step (wasn’t really concerned with an “official” vert result, but one based more on reality and game conditions - vert for me was means to an end) never measured a running vert in my life. as i got a little older, i think i lost some bounce from my running vert and my two legged jump was much higher - and in reality, your jumps from two legs in basketball are far more frequent than one legged so i didn’t fret too much, but was always curious. the 28" broke a very old record at the school but really, we’re talking grade school so i wasn’t quite sure of the relevance. one of my best attributes was that my immediate second jump (in real time game situations) was very close to being as high as my first jump. not sure what element of strength that would be but i haven’t studied this in a long time. i look at a rim now, and it just seems so high LOL.
I looked at your vids. You definately appear to “move” better than the first vid that you put up here.
One thing I noticed was into your crouch, you looked kind of stiff. You are already getting up there though. It appears that dropping down faster and harder, with a more reflexive action is going to get you up higher. This without increasing your “current power”. I guess what I’m saying, that the legs appear stiff, strong and powerful - but the descent looks slow for the amount of height you get. Perhaps if you can “get down” quicker, while staying tight, you will have more energy to get up with.
As much as Bodyguard and I have argued on this board, he’s right about the vert #'s [he’s still an asshole though]. A 40" vert from a standstill is mind blowingly impressive, and there are only a handful of people that can pull this off, and I’m not talking about that dumbass machine that measures hang time and translates it into inches. I’m talking about a true measured reach, vertec tested jump.
At my best I put up a 35" from a standstill and a 41.5" off 3 steps being tested like that and it looked like I was shot out of a cannon. All the guys you see in the league that dunk the shit outta the ball who claim 40’s were tested in the mid 30’s off of the run, with a few exceptions.

ya, you are right about the descent and ‘stiffness’…
to go from 34 to 36, i squatted ~5x/week for 1 month… then i went into a plyo block and got 37 or so, had to take a break from lifting.
then to go from 37 to ~39, i alternated above parallel squatting with heavy walking lunges, nearly every day… before my dunk sessions i would max on squat ~3 days in a row, then take one rest day, then load up on caffeine and jump.
the reason why i say all of that is because, all of that heavy lifting (relative to me) and high frequency really changed how i jumped… i noticed that my plant definitely became a bit slower, but i was jumping higher… this definitely had to do with all of that lifting, a slower plant/ammortization was allowing me to utilize my RFD more “fully”.
the ‘stiffness’ is a good thing… man my legs/glutes/quads felt so damn solid during my plants/jumps/plyometrics… it felt like i could absorb anything…
my SVJ still sucked though not practicing it had alot to do with it.
The internet is RIDDLED with ridiculous ‘internet badasses’ it’s a JOKE.

I know the “stiffness” is a good thing, I was hoping if you could pull down into the crouch faster and quicker that perhaps you will absorb and return more energy, thats all. I would see that it was all solid and there didn’t look like alot that was bled out due to being too lose.
I guess if you could figure out whatever else someone who went the same path you did.

And yes, these guys in the league that are perceived as hi flyers are 6.6 and up guys with mostly low 30 verts. Combine that vert with that height and shit looks amazing. high 30’s and into 40 is the top of the bell curve.
by the way, two or three step jumps more closely approximate game conditions anyway. what does it matter if you can only test at 30 from a dead two foot standstill if you can jump 38 in a game? the measurement is a means to an end - just a means of measuring progress. as long as you measure it the same time each time, it suits its purpose. but in a real athletic endeavor, you are rarely required to explode without at least a drop or jab step.
