Does anyone here use skipping rope as their source of cardio? I’m currently working out at home using only bodyweight exercises (push-ups, chins, pistols, bridges, etc.), and would like to skip for cardio. I have bad knees and shin splints, so jogging is not a viable option. What I need to know is how long/often should I be skipping to get a good cardio workout (not to just burn fat).
search for renegade rope training-coach davies.

Davies has an article with a rope routine here at T-mag- renegade rope training. haven’t tried but heard it’s a good one.
Read the article but start with 1 minute rounds and work your way up. your calfs will hurt but you’ll adapt quickly. start with both feet about a month down the line try the tricks. I bought a Reebok speed rope and have been happy with it (cheap too). Good luck.
thanx for the help, guys. anyone have any other advice for training at home with nothing but a swiss ball?
i would like to know a little more about those body weight exercises. what are pistols and bridges. i can’t lift either and i’ve been trying to find as many body-weight workouts that i can. thanks.
Bodyweight exercices can be a great deal of fun too. I presume you are trying at home - do you have a pullup bar, some sort of padding on the floor? In faith, Coach Davies
Coach Davies, i don’t have a chin-up bar at home, but i do chins at a playground by my house on the way to work. My apartment is carpeted, so when i do bridges i just put a folded shirt under my head. i do have a swiss ball, a skipping rope, and am going to get bands so that i can do resistance training for my rotators. any suggestions you can give me for working out at home would be great. thanx.
h.b…there’s a great article by Coach Davies called renegade training here at t-mag that will show you how to do pistols…for bridges go to mattfurey.com, it’s a great site for bodyweight exercises, especially for combat athletes.
Hey guys - I`ve been using rope work quite successfully for the last few months. Once you get sorta good at it, it actually becomes quite fun (IMO). It becomes especially challenging if you add another excercise between rounds like fisted pushups or burpees or something. You should give it a try.
thanks for the information. helped a lot.
