In answer to your original question, the ‘skiny fat’ hormones are chiefly:
Cortisol - breaks down muscle as a result of inappropriate stress response. Can be counteracted with bacopa and phosphadtylserine.
Estrogen - causes the body to store fat in a female pattern. Also reduces testosterone output. Can be counteracted with milled flax seeds and resveratrol.
This is just the basic information. Books have been written on the subject already.

Excellent, thanks for your answer, very informative, thats the kind of reply I was after all along. I get stressed very easily, and its a constant at work. Possibly a factor with cortisol. After a quick google resveratrol is found in red wine. A plan of action seems to form immediately…

Yep, no contradiction, I eat a solid amount of good food. Are the selections i make the very best? Nope. They’re based on cheapness and quick preparation e.g. oats in bowl, milk on oats, eat. I ought to make the effort to prepare meals in advance, cook chicken breast etc, include broccoli and other stuff i dont know about. Thats on me, lack of gains for not doing that are my fault.
Yoda doesnt speak like that, he says “there is no try, only do or do not”. Equally applicable im sure
Bushy beat me to it. Cortisol. Read up on everything about it.
I’ve recently discovered that I respond strongly (and favorably) to phosphatidylserine supplementation. I only discovered that through keeping meticulous detailed records on my workouts, bodyweight, diet and supplement regime. As a just-turned-50 ectomorph, it’s not all that surprising that cortisol is playing a leading role in my own hormonal battlefield.
Advice: if you want to learn what works for you, consider changing only one variable at a time.
i was like you ( about 130lbs and squatin about 60lbs ) . theres no such thing as skinny fat . youve got no muscle and your fat .
what i did about 5 or 6 years ago after reading and trying all the bollox in arse wipe mags and getting nowhere was i sorted out me protein for the day (150g) and me carbs ( around 300g before n after w/o) mixed that with fruits n veg’s for the rest of the day and added 1 litre of whole milk every day for a week .i did this every week till my weights n lifts started goin up ( it took 4 liters a day to get the numbers movin).
also at the same time i started S/L 5x5 .
5 years later im still not big ( 179lb about 9 or 10% bf) and squatin 220lb but im happy with my progress .

You dont actually know the answer to my question do you? No.[/quote]

Op… why do you feel the need to talk like Yoda?

If we did want some kind of vitamin/mineral/herb/antioxidant to bring down cortisol, wouldn’t Vit.C (small amounts), or Mg, or Valerian Root, or Garlic Extract be just as effective?

The best analogy I can think of would be to compare the effects of PS to steroids, if Vit C,Mg etc are like ‘herbal test boosters’.
PS works MUCH better than any of the other things you list.

yo BBB,
what are you top supplements for balancing out cortisol? i’m guessing PS is #1 on that list?

What kinda protocol would you suggest using PS? Do you think it would actually make a significant difference?

If you are a stresshead, then yes, 2g of PS should make a significant difference.
Put it this way… You know when you’ve had a ‘really good night out’ and you really wired, but trying to sleep, because you have to, but you’re stressing out? Well 2-3g PS really works to calm you down, on a hormonal level.
So I would say that it would be a definite boon to any cortisol-control protocol.

Thanks! I’ve been considering looking into it but the price has put me off.

Thanks BBB. yes i’m a major stress case. as evidenced by my ridiculously disproportionate gut that’s trying to burst out of my dress shirt as i sit at work right now.
(a word of warning to skinny fat stressheads, don’t try to bulk till you sort your crap out or the only gains you’ll get are on your gut even if you bust your ass in the gym 5 days a week and eat low carb aside from peri-workout. at least that’s been my experience… repeatedly.)
I can’t believe this thread has taken a turn to really entertaining this guy’s perceived hormonal deficits. WTF? He has been “lifting” for “3 years” and is 5’10, 150 pounds? That is not stress man, this dude needs to fucking eat and lift harder. His diet is shit (whoever said he needs to eat like a grownup is spot on).
If you want to look at hormones, look at possible grain allergies from all the oats…
And given how big of a douche this guy was to the first person that offered advice, I can’t believe this thread has made it to 2 pages.
OP: Go google “Starting Strength” by Mark Rippetoe and follow his program exactly. Yes, you are still a beginner and you are weak as fuck. The program will work for you.
Drink a gallon of milk a day, eat real grownup food, and get huge. Worry about cutting later. You look like shit right now becuase you have no muscle.
Don’t know if you ever found the information you were looking for but here is the article I think you were talking about:
I would figure out your diet and training and make sure that you are seeing some decent gains before really supplementing anything unless you have a lot of money to spend. What you eat is the more important and supplements are just as the name implies, a supplement, not to replace whole foods.

A gallon of milk? You are joking right?

I’m not actually! Yes if he truly has a hormone problem, this would not be a good idea, but this hormone problem has not been confirmed or even remotely evidenced. He read some article once and self-diagnosed himself as having some issue. The fact remains he is 5’10, 150 pounds or whatever. He needs to put on some appreciable size before he even worries about his “body shape”.
The GOMAD (gallon o milk/day) approach has worked for a TON of skinny lifters.

I await your second point with bated breath! Or was that it?
Lactose can cause a lot of problems from some populations (eastern asia and africa most specifically), but most europeans are able to properly digest it without problems.
I have had good success with recommending it to skinny people who are trying to get into training. They can afford to put on a bit of fat since they are so small to begin with, and their lifts go through the roof.
As long as you can handle it, I think its a very good supplement.
