Good look today mate, if i’ve got my timing right.
Just quietly…Simo is Killing it in the comp.
Looking great.
Great lifts and good music.
Saturday 23rd August - Winter City Showdown Melbourne
Weighed in at 92.4KG for this comp, which was a long way under the max of 105KG for my class.
This comp was in the big exhibition centre in the centre of Melbourne which luckily for me is only 20 min drive.
Got there around 8:30am, signed in and found somewhere in the strongman area to put my stuff. We had an athlete briefing at 9:15 which didn’t throw up any changes or issues for me. Then we had about 45 mins to get ready sbd warm up.
This competition had novice and open for both men and women. They ran the men and women at the same time which meant it moved quickly which as great.
There were 3 guys in the masters U105 section, I met the other two at the start and they were both nice guys. One was my age (51) but 105KG the other was 10 years younger (41) and also 105KG. I know today was going to be hard.
First event was the Axle squat. Which was 150KG (330lbs) max reps in 60 secs. The axle had big tyres on it and then more weights added to the correct weight.
The other older guy went first and only got 1 rep, lost his balance on the second as the bar moved forward. I realised the balance on this would make it hard.
I stepped up unracked and walked back, got tight and waited for the squat command. The bar felt heavy and but unbalanced. I went nice and deep for the first rep and it was hard. Breathed through the next 3 reps which all got harder. Paused at the top after rep 4 and got a good few breaths then went for it and ground out rep 5. Called it at 5. Not as many as I wanted but it’s what I had on the day.
The young bloke went next and got 6 reps, he looked like he had a few more of he needed them.
Second place - good start.
Next up was the keg clean and press. The weights for this weren’t too bad, they were 55KG (121 lbs), 60KG (132 lbs) and 65KG (143lbs).
I had only used a 55KG keg in training but it moved fine so I was comfortable with the weights.
I had a solid run here. I fumbled my grip a little on the first keg which cost me a second or two but other than that is was a quick viper press with each keg
I got second place again here. Pretty sure the fumble cost me the win.
Third event was the deadlift ladder.
4 bars in 60 secs
Deficit 180KG (396lbs)
Axle 180KG (396lbs)
Trap bar - 190KG (418lbs)
Power bar - 190KG (418lbs). Amrap last bar
I decided to not use the straps for this and just go for it.
Pleased with how I went on this, The deficit and axle were smooth, the trap bar was horrible, it was hard to get it balanced and the handles were thicker and smooth. Lots of people were struggling with it. I made sure I got my hands dead centre, gripped hard as heck and just pulled. It felt heavy but ended up not being that bad.
The last bar at 190KG was a tough pull, I got the first rep and then went again and managed to grind out number 2, but that was all I had left. Got a bit of a bleed under the skin on my forehead after this, but all good.
Guess what - I came second
Last event was a sandbag medley.
2 sandbags 80KG (176lbs) and 90KG(198lbs)
Pick up run 5 meters, shoulder the bag, drop it, pick it up, run 5 meters, shoulder it, drop it.
Repeat with the heavier bag.
This event was proving as brutal as I expected, lots of guys were running out of steam on the last bag.
When the whistle went I went to pick the bag but didn’t get my hands in the centre and I had to re pick it. The 80 bag was no real problem.
Ran back of the 90 got a good pick, carried it then shouldered it. Dropped it and was breathing really hard now. Picked it again and walked it to the end and then went to shoulder it. It only went half way up so I had to wrestle with it. I was so close to getting it but complete ran out of air and dropped it.
This was still good enough for another second place. But this was really hard, I was breathing hard for over 10mins after finishing this.
All done and happy with a solid second place.
There was a few things that didn’t go perfect and I can improve on next time, but I am still bloody happy.
Top effort - inspiring how you hard you go week in week always improving!
Legend.
Thanks mate, it doesn’t get easier but it’s still
Better than the alternative.
Love the write up as well,
Awesome work, as always.
That’s awesome! Congratulations!!
Inspiring Effort as always, mate. Finish second ahead of a guy same age but 10kg heavier is a Great achievement IMO. And keeping up with the young fella no mean feat either!
Bozo I am.
congrats
Great job Simo! You should be proud of that competition. You looked strong out there. Very impressive showing!
Damn, @simo74! You’re a frickin’ beast.
Congratulations.
Awesome job! You’re strong as an ox.
Great showing mate! Enjoyed the write up and videos. Very very solid performance on your end.
Keep this stuff on your own log:rofl: don’t want people thinking I competed and trained on the same day. ![]()

You are a beast!! You did great! Also, I’m thinking if you add some more veggies to your diet, next comp will be yours. ![]()
I am looking at another comp in October. I can add 12KG and still be under the weight. What veggies will help me bulk to to over 100?
All of them!! lol
But for serious - shoot for variety and different colors every single day. You’ll get the most nutrients that way and hopefully you won’t get sick of certain veggie.
