Simo - The Red Shoe Diaries Part 2.0

Went out for dinner with work tonight to an old fashioned steak restaurant in Richmond (suburb of Melbourne).
The restaurant has a fixed menu that is basically three courses of meat.
Start with a home made beef sausage.
Followed by a tasting plate of liver, steak, pork fillet and a pork patty.
Then main course is steak, I chose the porterhouse and had it rare. It was extremely good.
The only thing they served with all this meat was a bowl of salad on the table which consisted of tomatoes, iceberg lettuce and picked cabbage.
@T3hPwnisher would definitely have appreciated this a little more than @QuadQueen

@simo74 and @wiseman83 as you know, my family travel a lot. Lately my wife was finding cool things to do that turn out to be near Darwin. As Americans we default to imagining Oz as being one ā€œplaceā€ (no further comment on Americans’ view of the rest of the world) but on further study, it’s friggin huge! Same size as the continental US. We can get to Sydney for cheap but Darwin seems to be off the beaten path.

Are there any secrets we should now about transport across the country, IE a cheap local airline or perhaps a teleportation machine?

We aren’t city people, we are all about national parks and historic or prehistoric sites, and Darwin caught our attention but seems like it’s about as remote as it gets!

Think of Darwin and the Northern Territory like Alaska. It’s a HUGE place The NT, with less than 300k people… There is more people is my city - Wollongong (90 minutes south of Sydney).

It’s worth going though, but it won’t be cheap. Darwin itself is kind of shit. I wouldn’t use it as more than a stop between Sydney and where you want to go.

Kakadu National Park is monstrous. And more than amazing. The Katherine Gorge is our Grand Canyon… Except it’s wet and green and full of Crocs. Awesome. Things like The Adelaide River are great too, they do tourist cruises down it, feeding Crocs what not.

You could do a tour from Darwin to Uluru (and see that, plus the devil’s marbles, mataranka springs and other stuff along the way. I wouldn’t drive it, I mean I have driven it… But I’m Australian :upside_down_face:. It’s a long fkn way. Pretty sure they do bus tours.

Did I mention how big the place is?

It’s really big. I mean driving Sydney to Darwin or Perth is literally like driving NYC or Florida to LA.

Re flying around the place, it can been cheap at times, but not as cheap as the US domestic airlines. There is one company, Jetstar, cheap as… But horrible and unreliable I find. We generally use Virgin Or Qantas prices depending. But Sydney to Darwin or Perth always seems so expensive. 5 hour flights.

We have the best country in the world, so it’s well worth visiting. I know you’re not a city guy, but Sydney is Unreal. One of my favorite cities in the world, and I’ve been to a lot of them. Melbourne is ok… But I don’t rush back. Adelaide is really cool, as is Brisbane. With plenty to do near them that they are worth the visit.

Tasmania is Wild. Another Alaska, but without all the things that want to kill you. A driving holiday for a week there is the go to. You’d love it. Can fly into Hobart or Launceston, hire a car and just have at it. Still also Big. Like the size of West Virginia. 40% of is national Parks. Also a UNESCO world heritage site. Also has heaps of heritage sites left over from the early 1800’s.

Plan your trip well… research like a mad man. You’ll not regret it. You’ll need as long as you can take leave for. Then you’ll want more time. Then you’ll want to come back.

Then you’ll move here. :joy:

@jdm135 please refer to what Wisey said above about the Northern Territory and Darwin, I have lived here 20 years but still haven’t made it that far North yet. Did we say this is a big place.

With regards to the cities peoples opinions tend to very depending on where they are from. Growing up near London in the UK, I am not the biggest fan of Sydney. Its is a crap City to drive in (although most are). The public transport is OK but nothing like New York or London. Sydney is more a beach culture city for me with the best places to go away from the City center. Melbourne whilst it is next to a bay it is not a beach city vibe, its more cosmopolitan and a great cafe / coffee culture.
Adelaide is more like a sleepy town than a City, much slower vibe and nice easy culture. Brisbane is half way between Adelaide and Sydney, more laid back but growing fast and feels a bit more like a proper city than Adelaide. Perth is like a different country, people are just different in WA.

I think though if you have grown up in US cities then none of our cities will feel big to you, and all them them will have things of interest. It is also worth remembering that there are lots of options for National parks, Rain Forrest, isolated beaches, deserts etc. not more than a couple hours drive out of most of the cities

I forgot to mention to the Blue Mountains! 90 minutes west of the Sydney CBD.

Plus obviously the south coast from there also is a only a few hours away and just stunning.

From Melbourne, it’s a nice drive to Adelaide along the great ocean road. Couple days worth.

Strongman Sunday PG version

Hy son and eldest daughter both asked if they could do some training today so I was really happy to help them.

We set up out the front of the house with the tyre sled, some kettle bells, the 28kg sandbag and some dumbells.
I set the gym timer to go every 2nd minute for 10 rounds. And had them do what ever they wanted out of;

Tire drag forward
Tire drag backwards
Tire drag using arms like a pulley row
Farmers carry
Goblet carry
Waiters Walks
Sandbag deadlift
Single arm overhead push press, changing arm every 3 reps.

They both did 10 rounds and actually enjoyed themselves. They alternated and it was good to see them give each other encouragement.

Both were suitably out of breath and feeling like their muscles had worked by the end.

We finished off with a nice home made smoothy.

Going to hopefully try and make this a weekly thing for the kids.

No issues there they are all pretty good with eating vegetables. Only thing is my son tends to like most of them raw.
