Conditioning day today but it is nearly 40c here. Might be just a vest walk to work up a sweat
I wouldn’t need a weight vest to work up a sweat in that weather. Just existing would suffice.
You are not wrong mate
Just finished my 30 min walk with a 22lb vest on. It was a little cooler that I first said, it was 38c (100f). Felt hotter than that in the sun. Sweat was running off every part of me.
Legs and hips sore, so spent some painful time on the roller and then the massage gun. Hopefully they should feel fresh and ready to deadlift tomorrow.
So some strongman news. I have signed up for a strongman comp in April. It is an introductory comp for people who what to try it out, so the weights are a little lighter than the open comp.
Events are
- Yoke & Viking Press Medley
- Farmers Carry & Sandbag Medley
- Deadlift Medley
- Implement To Shoulder Medley
Event 1: Yoke & Viking Press
Carry the yoke 15m, return with the yoke for 15m then move onto the Viking Press to complete as many reps as possible within the time limit.
Event 2: Deadlift Diversity
Complete 2 repetitions on each of the 3 implements in the series as many times through as possible within the time limit.
Event 3: The Farmers Carry & Sandbag
Farmers Carry 15m, Sandbag Carry 30m, Farmers Carry 15m within the time limit
Event 4: The Implement To Shoulder Medley
Attempt to shoulder a series of 6 implements within the designated time limit for this event finale
Weights in the table below. I am 92 right now so should be able to squeeze under 90 with no issues.
I will do compete in the under 90kg class. Sitting at 90 now so no issue making weight.
Looking forward to competing again, mostly against myself of course.
In other strongman news, this weekend is the Australia’s Strongest International competition. A whole weekend of amateur and Pro men’s and women’s competition. Taking the day off work on Friday so I can go to both days. Looking forward to watching strongman live again. Last time was 2019 at the Arnold. It has been a long time between drinks.
This is going to be awesome, @simo74! Excited for you.
Will your training shift focus to reflect the events in the competition, or are you planning to stay the course?
Good question. The training won’t really change much in the gym. Still squat, bench and deadlift progress and some overhead work as always.
I will switch to maybe a bit more overhead focus for the next training block which will lead into the comp.
I can use the sandbags at home to do both sandbag carry practice and the implement to shoulder. If I can get my 100kg bag to shoulder that should put me in good stead for what ever they throw at me.
I will probably add some farmers carry into my gym session nearer to the comp. Maybe as an accessory after deadlift or even as a warm up before.
That competition sounds awesome. I wouldn’t mind finding something like that near me.
So excited for you!
This will be fun.
I’m excited for you, mate! I can see you doing very well if you focus on speed a bit.
I read this as you telling me I am old and slow and it made me laugh a lot. It is also true. Thanks for the tip, I do need to speed up.
Looks like a great and fun comp ahead mate. Loving those movements And loads.
Wish I lived in the Melbourne! (Not mostly) ha
Well let’s be honest… You do stumble and fall down a lot… You should take that into account.
Weekend trip and compete ??? Plenty of room at my place.
Love they’ve got a decent split on BW in that table mate, looking forward to reading how you fare. Get a mate to record some events you’re in too?
Love to.
Just booked a 4 night boozey weekend with the boys on Brisbane for my 40th. Haha. With a US trip in May, I think my wife might Actually kill me.
My dad will be over here from the UK, so hopefully he will come to watch with my son. My son can film the events.
Wednesday 18th Jan - week 1.
Deadlift
Bar x 10
60 x 5
100 x 5
Straps on
140 x 6 x 4 sets (308 lbs). RPE 5, 5, 5, 5
Breath pumping hard on these. Six reps feels like a sweet spot for me. Bar still moving quick but still hard work.
Db shoulder press - seated with back support.
25kg x 8 x 3 sets
Technically bad on these, arms wobbling all over the place. Should make the shoulders stronger though……. I hope.
Pull ups - fat bar thumbless grip
3 sets - 3, 5, 5
Elbow wasn’t too grumpy, happy.
HSGHP (hanging snatch grip high pulls)
70 x 5 x 3 sets
Still feel stupid and unco doing these.
Abs - ab wheel rollouts from knees
3 sets of 10
As I get used to these I am getting lower each time and that just makes it harder.
Physio exercises - still some discomfort in the elbow on some of these movements
Overall a good solid week 1
Ruined my low carb day with a serving of my wife’s delicious Mac n Cheese. I am blaming @QuadQueen because I am sure she said carbs were ok after a gym session. I have no regrets
