Simo - The Red Shoe Diaries (Part 1)

It’s also plain wrong.

While the principles of effective training are universal, the results vary from person to person. The only universal aspect of results from effective training is that you will progress. How much and how fast is something you have very little say about once all the main boxes are ticked.

I don’t really subscribe to this, pretty much agree with what @markko said. My issue is more with my own progress. My style of training or my coaches programming is a fairly slow progression. This is on purpose and I can’t criticise it, because it really works. I just sometimes question if I did (a) or maybe more of (b) I could progress faster. I guess it’s just human nature to want things quickly.
The key is that even though I somethings feel like this, I stick to the program and do what I am told.
For me having someone else program for me has really helped with this. There is deff more accountability when you are following a plan that someone else is going to check.

Thanks mate. I’m just slowly grinding away trying to catch up with the strong blokes around here like you.

This is exactly how I feel. You’re clearly better at controlling these urges than me.

I am pretty good at sticking to plan. Was always good at this even when I was 16 years old and started my first Weider program!!
I still had shiny object syndrome and chose different programs a lot. The worst was when I wrote my own programs. I would be forever tweaking and changing them.
I first time I had someone else program for me was when I was running and I found out I really liked it. I just logged the km’s and times and the coach adjusted the program based on how I was going. I knew nothing about running training so was happy to give over control.
When I had the option to do the same for strength training for powerlifting I didn’t hesitate. I am increasingly aware of how little I really know about programming for strength and I don’t have the time to educate myself fully enough to be good at programming. So I let someone else do it. It works.

That’s some really awesome progress!

That sounds familiar, for sure. I liked the programming ADD program for forcing me to stick to a plan for however long, the only problem being it was my plan.

Day off work looking after the kids today. My son has a friend over for a play date. Decided to take them all for a walk to the park. I walked and they all rode bikes. Ended up with 6 kids, as the neighbours two tagged along too. Feels good to be out in the sunshine and walking the leg doms away.

I first learned that your program is supposed to work. It’s the basic progression in the text books. But I continued to read and suddenly saw all these crazy methods I’d never heard of. That made things worse because it’s not like I maxed out my potential on the old fashioned linear block progression.

And now I’m older and broken so I have to tweak things to work around my joint problems.

I think this is the really important thing. We all add extra or do new programs we think will either be more interesting or yield better results and often while it may seem like it’s working we actually end up injured or at the same place we would have been if we just stuck at the basics. I think that’s why so many of the old school bodybuilders were so strong. They just stuck to the basics, worked really hard and hey presto they all got really strong.

Really solid at 130, looked great.

You and @MarkKO have convinced me, my next training block will be basic progression on big lifts, programmed by a professional, plus some assistance. No bells or whistles. See how that treats me.

There are a few poms on Team Panora already, hint hint

I am in no way strong enough to be joining Team Panora. Also, I can only train twice a week, with a small, no heavy stuff session most weeks.

Mostly the first one though. I would not be a good ambassador for Team Panora.

Less weak, for sure. I’ve mentally given myself another year and a half to get out of the “shit” category on at least a couple of things. By then, I anticipate being in a place where 3 days a week and competitions are realistic.
