Simo - The Red Shoe Diaries (Part 1)

Congrats Simo. Took a lot of courage, and you got some great lifts too.

I really enjoyed reading your write up buddy. Hope you get to take it easy and eat some good food now!

Excellent write-up and congrats on the PRs. Even the bench counts as a big PB despite the red lights imo.

You tube link of the day if anyone is interested.

Lifts were:
Squat 130 - 142.5 - 152.5
bench 110 - 120(2 reds) - 120 (3 reds)
deadlift 160 - 175 - 182.5
total 445.

Outstanding write up and performance dude. Lame to get 2 reds on that second bench. Such a stupid rule.

Thanks mate. Lol I did think that for a bit too. I’m ok with it now though. It still went up both times with no help so it still counts as a PR for me.

To me your bench seems really strong compared to the other lifts? How do you feel about it?

I’d love to hear your plans going forward from this meet.

I don’t understand these bench rules. You either press the weight or you don’t. There’s no benefit to a small dip.

Funy you should say that. There were 15 lifters in my flight yesterday and for squat and deadlift I was about 5th person out (they go in order lightest to heaviest attempt). When it came to bench it was reversed. I was about 4 from the end.
I think the bench numbers come from too many years as a young bloke trying to be a bodybuilder and doing lots of bench and dumbbell presses. Also even in the times I spent away from the gym which was a lot of time, I always did press ups sporadically through the month. I would just do 50 push ups before getting in the shower for no real reason than to check I still could. That meant when I went back to the gym the bench press came back pretty quick.
With squats I think the 5 years of long distance running I did before coming back to the gym have had an impact. The squat is getting better and now my best is 152.5 i’ll push for 155 and then 157.5 etc etc. The long term plan is to just keep improving slowly over time.
With deadlift I think there’s a lot more to come I just don’t want to push too fast at my age and get injured. Seeing how strong some of the other lifters were yesterday has certainly pushed my thoughts of where I need to be.
As of yesterday I now ticked off the 1 2 3 4 goal, so now its on to 2 3 4 5 I guess.
I haven’t formulated a plan yet in terms of comps or training, i’ll rest this week and then talk to the coach and see what we decide.

The theory is that you can use it to get rebound to bounce the weight back up into position.

But in strongman no one cares as long as you lock it out, haha.

That’s the ugly beauty of strongman.

Makes sense. I have a buddy who works out hard core and never makes any progress (food and programming issues) but he has a killer bench for his weight. He does tons of push ups. Seems they really do help. I don’t remember the last rime I did a push up… I should probably change that.

My dad is 72 years old and still goes to the gym 5 days a week. He does a set of push ups and bodyweight squats every morning upon waking. He has done this for years and years. He still puts up 25kg dumbells on dumbell bench for reps no problems. Plenty of young kids struggle with that. I think the push up is very underrated as an exercise and helps build great capacity if you do it often enough.

I agree and I still don’t do them often.

Way to smash the first one! Congratulations!

If I could throw resistance on them easy then I’d have no excuse

Awesome write up and results for the meet Simo! Sounds like an awesome day overall, congrats on your first meet.

You just run a band around your back and to each hand, or put a weight, back pack or small child on your back.

Thanks @littlesleeper It really was a fun day. It amazed me how people of all ages shapes and sizes can all be so supportive and positive to one another whilst still competing. I achieved what I wanted to for the day , even if my total was 10kg down on my overall goal and now have a benchmark set that I can work to improve on. I don’t think i’m ever going to break a record but I know I can get stronger and do more in the future.
