Comp day 13th October

Firstly sorry if this post is a little long but I’m just unloading the day from my head.

The doors of the gym opened at 8:00 and I arrived 8:15. Said hello to a few other lifters including some I had met before at the workshop I did in August. It was nice to have a couple of friendly faces there. But everyone I spoke to was super nice and encouraging anyway.

First off I checked my heights for the mono and bench set up, and then gave the heights and the opening lifts to the organisers. After that I found somewhere to sit down and tried to relax a bit. The briefing started at 9:30, and the first flight of lifting (which was the women) started at 10:00. I was flight B about 5 from the start.

Once the women started lifting I worked my way over to the warm up area and went through my warm ups as planned. There was about 15 lifters in flight B and 3 bars to warm up on so it worked out pretty good. The warm ups seemed to go fast and I was a little worried I had warmed up too early but never mind. I just sat down watched the end of the women’s squats and tried to stay carm. I was feeling pretty nervous at this point.

Flight A finished and it was time to lift. I was 5th up so watched the first couple and then got myself ready to squat.

Opening Squat was 130kg, walked to the mono, got myself tight and I un racked the bar. Settled and got eye contact with the official and waited for the squat signal.

‘Squat’ big breath, tight lats and brace and go. Hit depth and then Up and it’s done. Official calls rack and I put the bar back. First one out of the way and it feels great.

I chose 142.5kg for a small PR on my second (coaches orders).

It went pretty much like the first. Walk out, get tight, wait for the command, hit depth and straight back up. No problems. Now I’m feeling good.

I walk to the table to give my third lift and say 150kg (this was mine and the coaches plan) and girl was like you have 155 easy, so I thought about it a second and went right let’s go 152.5kg

Watch the other lifters, try to stay calm and wait for my third attempt. They call my name and it’s time. I walk out, get really tight and I un rack that bar.

The official says squat, I brace and go. Hit depth and come up a few inches out of the hole and it starts to slow. The crown shout and I just drive up and it keeps moving.

Fk Yes 152.5kg for a Big PR

That’s squats done and I’m feeling pretty good. Time to eat something, rest and wait for bench warm up.

I warm up bench as planned and get the timing just about right.

My opening bench is at 110kg. I unrack the bar, wait for the command, pause on the chest, wait for the command, press it up, wait for the command and rack it. It moved pretty easy, very happy.

Now I have to decide on my second attempt. The original plan was 115 but the opener felt good so I decided to push it 120.

Watch the other lifters, try to stay calm. Now it’s time for my second attempt.

The bar is at 120kg which would be a PR for me. I unrack the bar, wait for the command, lower it to the chest and the pause is looong. I get the press command and push hard, the bar moves. A few inches and then slows and then stops. I drive harder and it goes up. I wait for the command and rack it. Look up and fk it 2 reds. I check and they say the bar went down slightly when it stopped. Not happy.

I retake 120 for the third and now I’m real nervous. I know I can press this.

I unrack the bar, wait for the command, lower it to the chest and anticipate the press command. I press a milli second too quick, the bar does up fine, I wait for the rack command, look up and three red lights.

Now I’m pissed, pissed at myself for missing and for going off plan. Time to eat, try to relax and then deadlift.

Deadlift warm ups go fine, I take some pre-workout and then it’s time to go. I am near the start of the flight for deadlifts.

Opener is 160kg and it moves fine.

I select 175kg for my second (as per the plan).
This also moved fine and it’s time to pick my third.

I decided to stick with the plan this time and pick 182.5kg. This will be a PR and 4 plates if it goes up.

I’m getting pretty nervous and a little twitchy from the pre workout now.

They call my name, I chalk my hands, walk out, get a big breath, grab the bar and pull. It moves slow but it’s moving so I know Ive got it. Good lift and a PR.

Finished with 152.5 - 110 - 182.5 for a 445kg total (979 lbs).

Overall I’m pretty happy. I hit a PR on squat and deadlift and the PR weight on bench went up twice but I failed it because of technical things. I’ll reflect more over the next few days and add more thoughts then. If you are still reading this for down, thanks

Good write up. Good performance too. Unlucky on bench. Missing a call sucks, but that press call was SLOW even by what I’ve seen of IPF meets.

Congrats my friend, big Pr’s all over the place.

Great write up Simo, As Koestrezier said, sat on the edge.

Really is fun to follow my fellow log writers going to the platform. Quality.

That squat was awesome, like right out of the hole you thought, F’ck it’s too heavy, and then you just pushed through.

The number of posts in the few hours since your comp write up will tell you that

Nice job! Bad luck on the bench, but three PRs in a day is no easy task.

Thanks mate. I learnt a very valuable lesson about not going off plan and I do think I was a little unlucky on the first one. For me it felt like it stopped but not moved down, but you can only do with what the officials say on the day. So next time I will get 120 and more
