Simo - The Red Shoe Diaries (Part 1)

Didn’t see, but heard about.

I’ve got Markos Markopoulos on FB, which is one of the best ways to keep current on anything new and impressive in powerlifting.

Feeling pretty good today. Usually I would have DOMS two days after training in Monday but nothing today. Lower back is still pretty creaky and sore but I don’t think this is muscle related. I think it will hold together OK for the comp this weekend and then next week i’ll go back to the osteo and get her to work some magic.

Most likely a lot of the niggles you’re feeling right now are at least in part due to your peak. Just feeling tired as shit isn’t all that happens, shit hurts too. It’s normal and will go in time for meet day.

Simo: has a coconut fall on his foot

Mark: it’s just the peak bro

Have you never heard of the coconut effect?

Alright @MarkKO @littlesleeper @bigpappafrance and anyone else who wants to chime in.
Any tip for the day, things to put in my bag, food, drinks etc etc. I know Mark did one in his log but that was like 3000 posts ago and I don’t have time to scan back through.

Hold up, I’ll fix that tomorrow

I hope you are right. It doesn’t matter either way I’ll be there and doing my job but it would certainly help with confidence.

My bag:

  • Water (my meet provided bottled water to the athletes, but I wasn’t leaving hydration to chance)
  • Light carb snacks that I know won’t bother my stomach; I brought some flavoured rice cakes, licorice and some gummy worms
  • An actual meal; My meet ran nearly 8 hours so it is wise to have something beyond just snacks. I brought a tupperware full of ground beef and white rice (salted). This is very easy on my stomach, good idea for not shitting on the platform during your third deadlift attempt.
  • Resistance bands and/or hip circle; I like these for warming up and staying warm between attempts (facepulls, pullaparts, side lunges, banded RDLs, etc)
  • Gear; Different shoes, wraps, socks, undies, etc. Even bring a big sweatshirt/track pants to keep warm in case the facility is kept cool.
  • Distraction; Some people used their phones, others had music playing through headphones, I had lots of visitors who came to watch/chat to provide me with the distraction I needed to not psyche myself out. The nerves can get the best of you at your first meet, so it is a good idea to have something that can sort of take your mind off of it and allow you to fully relax between your flights. It is a long day to be wound up tight with nerves.

I’m sure there are some things I’m forgetting, but hopefully a few of those will help you out!
Looking forward to it man!

To be fair, that’s a real power move and asserts dominance over your opponents in a big way.

Ed Coan approves lol

Ok, list.

Food - something you’re familiar with that’s easy to eat
Fluids - water is good, Gatorade better
Equipment - belt, knee and wrist wraps, soft suit, deadlift socks, etc.
Emergency - spare socks, shirt, underwear, super glue, pen knife, screwdriver if you have a lever belt, sports tape, liniment, painkillers
Sundry - anything like rollers you use to warm up, chalk

I’ll add two things:

1 nose tork: If you are not used to it, don’t use it on meet day! Because it might be offered to you.

2 caffeine: Don’t jack yourself up right from the start. It might be a long day. If your are a pre workout person, probably don’t take it before your first squat or split it up like half before squats, half before deadlifts. Contrary don’t forget to bring coffee or energy drinks, whatever you need.
