My way of dealing with people asking me for training and dieting advice, rather than explaining it to them, I invite them to the gym with me. If they come, I’m glad to teach them what I know. First day of the school year, I had 5 people follow me to the weight room. Only 1 currently remains, and he comes with me all 6 days.
If you want to shut him up about how BW training is the best then tell him you will do a work out with him if he will do a work out with you. I actually did this with a friend of mine he thought push ups, and squat thrusts and all this BW stuff was the way to go and I got sick of hearing about it so I said listen I will do one work out with you then a week from that day you do my workout with me. He killed me with like 500 push ups and 500squats, I mean just insane numbers of reps. He was extremely proud of himself when i dragged my ass to my car. 1 week later he came and tried to do my weight lifting with me. I was doing 5x3 at the time he couldn’t come close to finishing the workout from then on he converted to a bodybuilding approach to lifting and I got a good lifting partner out of the deal.

here is the eternal debate about weights vs bodyweight…This anoying ass at work is a bodyweights fanatic…he doesnt shut up about a person who does bodyweight stuff (pushups, pullups etc) will be bigger and stronger than a guy who only lifts weights…Now i know that this isn’t the case, but what can i say to shut him up??anyone got any smart facts?
I know i could just shove my fists down his throat but i would end up getting fired
Get big. If you were big, no one would be saying dumb shit like that to you.
I’ve never had a single person second guess or debate something like this.
How in the hell does that even happen?
One thing I’ve learned or realized: you do this for you or you’re doing it for the wrong reason. Dont get me wrong- i love the whole squat rack curlers threads on here. I have read through like a hundred pages of those and laughed. And I see people doing stupid shit at the gym all the time. I used to scream, WTF in my head. Now I’m just like whatever buddy. Wear the belt while you do seated curls.
I also have a co worker who sits at the desk right beside me that knows everything about weightlifting. I suggested a workout plan to him to see if he would do it. Of course its stupid and dumb. Oh and squats will ruin your knees. I was like whatever dude. Have a nice life and moved on.

THIS
If somebody suggests something asinine i look at myself, then look back up at them and say, “Well, I’ve never done that. So what do you think?”
yeah, it’s a rude, douchy thing to do, but something about the delivery makes them stop and think.

Perhaps it’s the need to extol what one believes to be good and right. Maybe I’m just a less confrontational person. Here’s an approach I like:
Nice Lady: Ugh. Chicken and broccoli again? How can you eat that every day?
Me: Sorry, I’d love to make a lasagna or something but I don’t have time or a husband who runs a restaurant (hint, hint).
Next day: lasagna!

The wonderful art of “the non-committal response”!
“Neat!”
“Uh huh”
“Wow, that’s great”
“You’re the man!”
“okthanksbye!”
or my personal favorite… “howyadoingcyalaterfu”
i mean really, best way to get them to shut up is just say you incorporate pushups and chin ups and other assorted bodyweight exercises with your weight lifting workout. youre not gonna change peoples minds for the most part

Same here. I don’t usually engage in conversations about working out and diet. Changing the subject gets your point across pretty effectively.
However, when my boss asked my advice about working out and eating right, I did talk to her about it, and she not only listened and implemented what I suggested, she has lost 20 lbs so far. She swims every each morning, and walk/runs 5 miles at night. Now she’s talking about getting a bike and entering a triathalon.
I only talked about it with her because she was always telling me how delicious and healthy my meals look. Now she makes fun of the women who go to weight watchers. My work is done.

Why do you guys care? Really? And why do you engage people in these conversations?
My same damn though.

Your physique should end the argument for you. If it doesn’t, and you’ve been doing this for a while, you may need to reassess your training style/nutrition intake
You would think that, but it doesn’t. I have literally had 300 lb. woman tell me that I eat “all wrong” and that I may look good now but I am going to get fat eventually. They go out of their way to tell me this. They are determined to convince me that everything I know is wrong and I should be following their “expert” advice.
When I point out the fact that they are morbidly obese, they get all huffy and try to argue that knowing something and living it are too different things. Then they start jabbering about Olympic athletes and their coaches and I just walk away at that point.
You would think that a fat, homely, wimpy, tub of goo would STFU about nutrition and training around someone who obviously is doing something right but that just doesn’t seem to happen in real life.
Perhaps it would work to say very nicely and apparently sincerely, “I’m glad that works for you, but I’m afraid it just hasn’t worked out right for me.”

I like you much better outside of the Politics and world issues thread Bill.
Well, as a back-handed compliment I guess that is a five-star one! ![]()

Me: I think I can help you Ms. Smith. So I design a program for her to follow so that she can start to take control of her health. I explain how weight loss and lifestyle changes are key here and over time, will reduce her need for medications. In fact, eventually she may not need them at all!
Her: Blank stare.
Me: What seems to be the issue? Is there some concern of yours that I didn’t address?
Her: Well, can’t you just give me some sort of ‘natural’ pill to replace my current meds?
Me: packs up practice to go teach college kids instead

Jesus Christ.
I can’t imagine the level of self-control you must have had to exercise in order to carry on a civil conversation after that.
Jesus Christ.
I can’t believe you are a professor at a college. That’s hot.

Agreed. I wouldn’t be able to contain my frustration here. I’d either be laughing at her or swearing at her.
You think coworkers are bad??? what about my ex classmate who was any resistance vs purist cardio
" I don’t want to be short"(why she doesn’t use resistance)
" You will not be slim"(I lost 20 lbs using free weights)
“You shoud run”(She walks at 3 mph at 3 incline for an hour a day)
Then i said " The american assosiaction of pediatrics has published a study finding weights to be good for-"
“Blah blah i don’t care about the american blah blah”
Then another classmate who is overrated said she will become better looking than me
“But don’t you want a firm lady with some muscle tone?”
“no no a nice pudgy lady will do”
I needed to get out my rage
So anyway what i did was go onto to facebook and cuss at her and block her. She is a tattletale so even if i say “bitch” under my breath i will be sent to the office.
Just shove your foot up his nostrils and his ass. Your lucky your an adult.

I had an obese coworker today tell me that my packet of splenda in my green tea was going to kill me…all while she microwaved her tv dinner for lunch.

Oh thats classic. Unfortunately while i was growing up, my family insisted that all diet drink were going to kill me.
Hence, i got chubby. Some diet soda couldve saved me some poundage thats for sure.
I pretty much gave up on personal training because of the whining. Last night I had this conversation with my hairdresser, after taking off my hoodie so it would not get wet while she was washing my hair (I had a tank top on)
her: Ohhh flex for me!
me: I’m not a body builder, it’s not that big a deal
her: i wish god gave me arms like that
me: he gave you arms, just work them a bit
her: well I’m doing slimfast right now, that will work right?
me: no
her: well I want to do the slimfast shakes, it’s fast and easy.
me: do what you want, just stop bitching about being flabby, k?
I’m thankful she is professional, my hair looks pretty good, she could have scalped me.
Lmfao at some of you, you clearly have never met anyone that went to prison(no weights anymore).
my friends little brother just came home and is fuckin ripped and about as big as i ever seen him. in reality it doesn’t matter what
you do as long as you work hard.

That is the Single Bravest Thing I have ever Heard.
I don’t even like it when my barber tries to turn my chair from the mirror. I want to see whats up.
