Shutting Up a Co-Worker About Training

The wonderful art of “the non-committal response”!

“Neat!”
“Uh huh”
“Wow, that’s great”
“You’re the man!”
“okthanksbye!”

I am often solicited for ‘diet’ advice from the women I work with. I tell them to email me their current stats, food cravings and what they are/aren’t willing to do. It is that last part that is gold.

They always come back with a laundry list of what they can not do. Such as…I can’t take the time to prepare my meals, I don’t have time for x, y or z. I can’t make different meals for myself while I cook something else for my family. My (insert family member here) won’t eat (insert healthy food here).

I tell them as nicely as possible that they are not ready to make the committment to themselves to be healthy. They pretty much leave me alone after that!
I got this this morning, lol!
Her: “How do I do a cleanse?”
Me: “Huh?”
Her: “I’m sick of eating bad food and being tired all the time! I need to eat better.”
Me: “Okay, eat vegetables and shop the perimeter of the grocery store. Stay away from fast food and processed garbage.”
Her: “But I don’t have time to cook!”

I have the regular friends who keep telling me that they know that they should get in shape, and ask me for training and diet tips. This is ALL wasted breath for me, since I know that they will never act on that advice, or even get into the gym or GNC.

I tell them that this lifestyle isn’t for everyone, and life is too short to drag your ass to the gym if you aint into it. That I do it 'cause I like the way it makes me feel, and that they should do whatever makes them feel good.

This is my lifestyle, and I live for it, but I try not to stuff it up everyones ass. There are those out there that have this need to tell people how to live. Fuck them, they don’t know shit.

Do what makes you feel good.
Best answer yet, IMO.

Lifting weights for many people is so far from their daily life that you cant expect to have one amazing rebuttal or fact that suddenly enlightens them. Run your own race, accomplish your own goals and maybe one day he will realize that you have the physique that they actually want. Arguing with people about something they cant think logically about is a waste, and you are much better off letting them be happy with themselves for what they are.

Her: “What’s that?”
Me: “That’s where they shove a hose up your ass and blast the shit out of your ass because you’re too fucking lazy to cook a vegetable”
Her: …

Honestly, I fucking hate that. I used to get hit up for advice all the time at my old job. I’d give them that same advice, eat cleaner, shop the perimeter, stay away from processed foods. And I’d the get the deer in the headlights look followed by an excuse as to WHY they CAN’T do that. I used to follow up with some questions as to why they couldn’t find the time to do it and I’d never EVER get a clear response.

I used to be a personal trainer and I fucking hated it. All these lazy ass people with their motherfucking excuses trying to add another fucking failure to their list. “Oh I tried a trainer and he couldn’t do anything for me…” THAT’S BECAUSE YOU ATE LIKE SHIT YOU DUMB TWAT. Yea, I made a few fatties cry.

Point is, if they don’t want to help themselve they’ll dig to the bottom of the excuse barrel to NOT do it. It’s an exercise in futility, seriously.

Oh, and PMPM go take a long walk of a short cliff.

just say hey…well you weigh lets say 200 pounds and can do 25 push ups…tell him to put 200 pounds on a barbell and bench it 20 times. bet he cant do it.

No one should make that excuse up not being able to cook. I’ve got in the habit of cooking before I go to bed. It’s like second nature for me to cook now knowing I’ll have food for the next day ready to eat.

does he not realize too that the only way to increase muscle size is to stress the muscle with more weight or change the angle. and if you are doing bodyweight all the time the muscles will just get extremely good at resistance and not get any larger due to lack of breakdown from excess stress by increased weight

just show him some pictures of bodybuilders like ronnie, jay frank zane, arnold and say they don’t and never did bodyweight exercises and they are massive.

^could you not fit that in one post? no wonder you already have 44 posts and it’s only 17 days into the month

Next time you have the bodyweight/weightlifting discussion, just tell him he’s wrong, and you don’t wan’t to discuss it any more. If he keeps going on about it, tell him to STFU and that there’s no reason to discuss with someone that obviously don’t know squat :stuck_out_tongue:

Holding diet and other variables constant, who would be larger, the person who doubled the amount of body weight squats they could do, or the person who doubled the amount of free weights they could squat?

Soooo, true…all of it! When I used to practice (I am an ND BTW), this was a VERY common conversation…

Me: So, what brings you in today Ms. Smith?

Her: I have Type II Diabetes am morbidly obese, have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I am on a host of meds and I don’t want to take them anymore, the blood pressure meds make me cough, the cholesterol meds make me tired and the metformin give me horrible gas. I want to take a ‘natural’ approach.

Me: I think I can help you Ms. Smith. So I design a program for her to follow so that she can start to take control of her health. I explain how weight loss and lifestyle changes are key here and over time, will reduce her need for medications. In fact, eventually she may not need them at all!

Her: Blank stare.

Me: What seems to be the issue? Is there some concern of yours that I didn’t address?

Her: Well, can’t you just give me some sort of ‘natural’ pill to replace my current meds?

Me: packs up practice to go teach college kids instead

Jesus Christ.
I can’t imagine the level of self-control you must have had to exercise in order to carry on a civil conversation after that.

sorry kept thinking of other things to put way after i posted. my bad.

It’s a waste of energy to argue with Know-It-Alls, even though you’re right.

I carry my food to work in a big canvas bag and a small cooler. Sure, people make fun of me. They say, “Damn, Momma! You’re so lucky you can eat so much food and not get fat as a house!” I’d say, “Luck has nothing to do with it, it’s all about the effort.”

I used to tell them all about nutrition and training, and that it’s not the amount of food, but the quailty, it mostly fell on deaf ears. They still ate their junk food and never got off their asses. Some will still make fun of me, most just ignore my “habits”, and a few people who think I’m nuts run away when they see me coming down the hall.

So now, if someone asks me what I do to look good, I say “Nothing. I’m just lucky.”
And you can take that to Vegas, baby.

Would it have violated your oath to prescribe her some placebos?

By the way, is ND Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine?

I bet you could come up with 100 names for every 1 he could come up with, and that is if he can come up with at least one.

the best he could do is name olympic gymnasts, and while those guys are built strong and lean, then aren’t hyooge by just about any standard of what is a big guy.

EDIT: you’d also want to come to an agreement on what constitues a big guy. like is 5’10 185lbs 10% bf what he thinks a big guy is? or are we talking the same height/bf, but 235+lbs?
How retarded.
A method of training is a method of training. Just because most gymnasts are short doesn’t mean that gymnastics won’t put on alot of muscle (or strength) on your frame. Being short is advantageous in gymnastics the same way being tall is advantageous in basketball.

Where is that video of that black guy doing gymnastics shit at a playground?
Isn’t that proof enough?
There are many many ways to train.

I just thought of the same thing:
