Shugs: Training Logs

I’ve noticed that a couple people on here have training logs (Goldberg, Steve, boxer_al) and I think that what they’re doing is a great idea as they can get feedback from people on what they’re doing.

I was thinking the other day that maybe there should be a separate category for people to have training logs. I think more people would do something like that if it wouldn’t clutter up something like the T/N category.

I’m not saying this is something that we need now. But sometime down the road if a category was to be done away with, it could probably be replaced with something like this.

Like I said, I think lots of people would like to do something like this, but they probably don’t because they wouldn’t want to clutter up the T/N cateogory.

Just an idea. Who would be willing to keep a training log if there was a specific category for it?

good idea, could be used a motivational tool also, i.e you say that you are going to post a pic of yoursef at the start and say what your goals are, i.e. loose fat, gain muscle or improve a lift and then promise to repost a pick at the end of the time period and if you fail to either update you log once a week or post a final pic then you get booted out and can’t post another log again!

Bump. I was hoping to get at least 2 replies.

The only reason i started doing it was because somebody said the dog lb was dead. I just did it to liven things up a bit on the lb. Ive gone back and forth about doing it because i only think one or two people actually read it. And then you have people who think im on a “high horse.” But i think there are so many questions about westside stlye training that can be answered by looking at the mine and steves log. I know ive learned a great deal from steve. especially about gear, shrugs, how weak i really am, etc. My training wouldnt be where it is now without steves log. It also serves as motivation. I lift alone so i have no one to compete with. Steve kicks my ass on all max effort leg exercises so when i go to the gym im trying to beat him and Landon. But people cant just glance at the workouts. they have to really read them and see why we are doing what we are doing. Most are too lazy to do this and their progress suffers.

I think it would be very beneficial to the user. It would allow peers to review and critique their workouts if needed. Great learning tool as well. It would allow others to see how people cycle their workouts, how they lay their long-term plans out, and even possibly allow others to incorporate one’s workout(s) into their own.

Even though Goldberg is an arrogant bastard on his high horse, his and Steve’s threads are incredibly helpful. I would love to see more like them.

I agree that a training log area (for all disciplines) would be a good idea. That way it won’t crowd out the other forums (if many start utilizing it). While I may not train to be a boxer, seeing Boxer Al’s training log is very interesting to me. I think other athletes’ info would be just as interesting, and helpful to those of us who may be helping others (trainers, coaches, those of us with significant others, etc.).

Goldberg: I think a lot more people read your log than you might think - I know I do, but can’t post questions or comments because I’m not part of the dogpound.

Good idea, I think. I would love to see some of the more experienced folks on here comment on their own workouts, and watch their progress, as well as newbies like myself.

Not a bad idea for a forum category. We’ll think about it.

In the future, T-mag may also offer a Fitday type of area for our readers.

I think this is the best idea of a new forum category that has been brought up.

Excellent. I’d definitely participate.

I’ve actually been considering developing a website that would keep track of training and diet logs, track progress, graphs perhaps, keep pictures of your progress…who knows. Whatever I can think of really.

I haven’t gotten started on it yet as I don’t have time. But a week from tomorrow I will be done with college and jobless. I will probably start developing the site in my spare time to keep me occupied. If I develope something good, I’ll get proper hosting and ask a few of my friends and people from this forum to test it out and make suggestions.

Here’s some of the ideas that I have off the top of my head:

  • Fully customizable diet/training logs
  • Extensive nutritional information database (you won’t have to look up P/C/F/Cals)
  • Automated recommendations (I had a data-mining class and have a basic understanding of how to do this)
  • Physique picture storage for progress tracking
  • Ability to download stored information from site to an Excel file
  • Ability to upload an Excel file and have stored information updated
  • Graphs (not sure how valuable these would be, number of graphs are infinite, which X vs Y (vs Z) would be valuable?)

Throw some ideas at me.

Yes, I like the training logs thing.

I read those ones in dogpound, and can’t say anything since i’m not a member. Same thing goes for several of the other things in dp, many a time i’ve forgotten and tried to reply and gotten that screen… lol

Keep the logs up, they are nice to see. I’ve been logging my stuff now in word, but it’s far too embarrassing to post…

While we’re on the subject of forum categories, maybe breakup Training and Nutrition to:

Training:

  • Fitness,endurance,etc
  • Powerlifting (including strong(wo)man)
  • Bodybuilding

And have Nutrition be it’s own, something like “Nutrition and Supplements”

Just a thought.

Also, maybe a feature to subscribe to Subjects. Right when you login, you would be able to view say Goldberg’s Log, Steve’s, etc. Again, just a thought.

Akheron, I would LOVE it if it came out well. I don’t like the feel of fitday, and many pieces of software make entering food a hassle.
An important feature for me would be that you could enter your foods in grams (applies to ALL foods and liquids) Because the caloric breakdown on labels in Denmark is always “per 100 grams”

Goldberg I always read your log, they just wont let me post in the dog pound.
Big Martin

I read Goldberg’s log in the beginning and stopped; but am back reading it with regularity now. As well as Steve’s.

I read the training logs in the Dog Pound as well as those on Dave Tate’s site. They really help uncomplicate things for me.

The reason I thought of this for me personally is so I would be able to post my baby-Westside workouts and have some of the Westside veterans give me advice on what to do and what not to do (i.e. do less reps and more sets of this exercise on this day, etc).

Akheron, IMHO, I think something like you’re thinking of would be too complex for most people. I know I’d probably spend like 2-3 hours a day there logging everything and whatnot and wouldn’t get any time to eat or train. Granted, its a great idea and some people may do really good on something like that. But I’d like to keep it as simple as it needs to be so I can get some constructive feedback.

I am all for having a Training Logs section. It gives us a look at what others are doing and allows us to incorporate new ideas or new meals into our routines.

It’s not the easiest thing to figure out, but there could be a way to mix the training logs section with the progress forum some others have suggested. For those looking for body modifications, they could post a before picture, log their training (and diet?) and then show us the end result, along with results along the way.

I don’t know. It’s just a thought.

I’ve noticed other boards have a training log section and they seem to work well. We also need a strength training board that would encourage more powerlifting, strongman etc contribution. Desperately.
