Shrugging at the Top of OHP?

Do you shrug or not on the OHP, I have watched videos, some guys shrug, some don’t
A little history, back in January I was shrugging at the end of each rep and winded up with a herniated disc in my left shoulder, just started doing OHP again first of July, scared as hell, any advice would be greatly appreciated

then don’t shrug…?

Also wtf is a herniated shoulder disk

I have never needed to shrug to get a stronger press.

I used to do overhead shrugs when I wanted bigger traps but I don’t do it when I OHP, I don’t think there’s much of a benefit but I might be wrong

Unless I’m mistaken it is physically impossible to raise your arms and get into a perfect overhead lockout position without shrugging the shoulders up somewhat, which also recruits more muscle/strength/stability into the lift. Obviously you would ‘shrug’ as much as is required to make the press work efficiently.

However I’m assuming you mean a full overhead lock-out as used when pressing maximal weight/oly lifts etc, as opposed to a more bodybuilder/pump style press where you may play around with the form and not care about going from clavicle to full-lockout, etc.

I don’t shrug on my standing overhead presses, but on the behind the neck seated overhead presses, i do contract and squeeze the shut out of my traps at the top with low weight. Seems to really be driving my overhead strength lately

I remember someone saying try raising an arm up as in a front raise - physically impossible to go above your head without an element of shrugging. It’s the same thing.

Lol labral tare im guessing
