Shrug Tips

Hey,
I do standard dumbbell shrugs (holding then to the side) for my traps workout, and i came across a lot of articles and forums where people were saying things like, “the behind the back shrug is the best” or “the overhead shrug gives the best peak”, and all that stuff. I just wanted to hear some tips and recommendations if any of you have had personal success with a certain movement. Also, i would appreciate if you say what part of your trap the shrug targets. Thanks

Tip number 1: Stop Doing Shrugs
Tip Number 2: Start Doing Deadlifts and Barbell Rows

I do those too. Shrugs aren’t my only back workout

If you have a real interest in shrugs, consider picking up “Kelso’s Shrug Book”. Whole lot of interesting stuff in there on the topic, and lots of variety in it.

I haven’t trained shrugs in a lot time, but when I did, I was partial to the Hise Shrug. Seemed to have decent carryover to the squat, and it was a very logical movement. The Kelso shrug itself always looks cool, but it’s difficult for me to set up the mechanics for it.

When you weigh 140 pounds, shrugs do not deserve this level of brain power. Pick one kind of shrug and stick with it. There is no “better” or “best” shrug for now, DB shrugs are just fine.

Load the fucking bar with heavy weight and move it. Stop over thinking it

That makes way to much sense and is way to simple no way that works.

There are better exercises than shrugs. Do farmers walks and weighted carries to build good traps, back and body in general.

If you’re already using a good routine, shrugs after deadlits is a good idea. I always preffered the BB shrug and use a rack alternate grip (I’ll probably get the ‘but you’ll twist your back’ or simmilar comments) but the important thing, in my view, is to aim at shrugging with more weight than you deadlift.
