Shoulder Position for DB Shrugs?

What type of position do you keep your shoulders in for shrugs? Back, forward, or just natural like when you standing. As of now I keep my shoulders in a natural position and I’m really feeling it in my middle traps but I want more in my upper traps.

Also, can anyone give me any other exercises to increase my neck size? Thanks.

Straight up, straight down. Don’t roll your shoulders or move them in any other way or you risk putting extra pressure on your rotater cuff, i think.

Increase neck size by a) using a neck machine in the gym. b) stand against a wall and push your head into it from all 4 sides(front, back, sides). I’m sure there are portable weight devices you can buy to also help. I think there is these straps you can buy that wrap around your head, with weights on one end. Not sure of the name though.

Best way to knock out two birds with one stone here in my opinion is rack deads. By the time you can rack dead 600x10 from below the knees you won’t worry about upper traps or neck, you’ll probably be more worried about being able to buy dress shirts off the rack.

Yup, imagine there is string from your shoulder to ear lobe and you are pulling your shoulder up with it.

D

Keep your head down and shrug backwards as if your trying to squeeze your traps together If someone places there finger in the middle of your traps you want your traps to squeeze their finger. Sometimes I like to go really light just to squeeze super hard

disregard what that moron just said, you always keep your head up when shrugging.

Perfect. This is officially my new goal.

LOL yeah. Worst advice ever(no disrespect, but it’s the truth)! Never keep your head down and never shrug in any direction but up and down. I see some people even rolling their shoulders in the gym while shrugging…where do people get this stuff?

I agree with the other guys, rack deads are probably better at development for your traps, or at least thats my experience. I can do heavier rack pulls than I can shrugs…and traps usually respond to heavy weight.

Anyone else find it completely impossible to keep a straight face while shrugging? Can anybody? No matter what I do, I always end up sneering like Yates.

I always thought it had something to do with involuntarily contracting neck and face muscles along with the traps.
