Question About Shrugs

Whenever I do shrugs, people keep telling me I should rotate my shoulders as I do them to work my traps. Wouldn’t doing that damage my shoulders?

Yeah, it’s not good for your shoulders although I don’t remember why. If you are shrugging your shoulders, you are working your traps.

yeah just go straight up and down, you can always do them on an incline bench to hit middle traps, incline barbell wide underhand grip shrugs work the middle and lower fibers quite well

Dont do that. It’s notorious for messing up peoples rotator cuffs. Shrugs and deadlifts.

Thanks for the information.

Shrugs are bad for your shoulders IF you do them like 90% of the young guys I see doing them. They either violently jerk the bar up and down, or they put way too much weight on the bar and barely moving the bar. When you do them hold your head down so that your chin touches your chest. Squeeze your shoulder up and back so that you can feel your traps squeeze together.

wait, head down? or head up and shrug to your ears

I am definitely going to try touching my chin to my chest. Every time I do shrugs I only feel sore in my neck muscles. Fuck I hate shrugs, they are soooo boring.

With your head up your range of motion is limited. Drop your chin to your chest and you will be able to squeeze all the way up.

Yep, straight up and down works great but doing them on an incline (as stated above)is IMO the best for me.
