Shoulder Pain

About two and a half years ago I seperated my acromioclavicular(AC) joint playing rubgy. I gave it ample time to heal before returning to lifting, and have had no problems. Recently (within the past month or so) my bench press has gone up and I’m at 285, which is the highest it has ever been.

I maxed out three weeks ago and have continued training since that time, but every time that I do regular grip bench press or dumbbell flyes there is a shooting pain in my same shoulder that I seperated. This only occurs on those two lifts and I never feel the pain otherwise, although my shoulder sometimes pops when I’m warming up/stretching.

Is it possible that I aggravated this old injury? Should I focus on some shoulder work to help strengthen my shoulders? Any help would be great

Yes its possible.

Yes I would have a look at Mike Robertson’s and Eric Cressey’s writing on shoulder, concentration on saving the shoulders using plenty of external rotation etc balancing your pushing and pulling.

Also I know ive been guilty of this when the weights are rising consistantly, not backing off always pressing on each workout in the hopes of a few more lbs takes its toll fast. I suggest taking a break every few weeks at least from going for those maximal loads and hitting some higher rep work. Try and get the ligaments etc time to catch up. strengthen them hit some higer rep 8-12 even 12-20.

best of luck w the shoulder and nice progress,
