Shoulder Pain After Push-Ups

So my buddy and I were (trying) to do one handed push ups…just messing around and what not after training. Anyway, when I did the push up with my left hand…I heard this weird (slight) pop and click noise in my left shoulder. This was followed by a sudden pain. I iced my shoulder right away for a long while and took some advil and the pain has subsided for the most part.

  • When I lift my hand over my head there is some pain (shoulder press motion)…not severe but its pretty uncomfortable.
  • When I do a “lateral raise” type movement…it hurts after lifting 90 degrees…(hope I got the ‘degree’ right). Basically, when its straight out to my side its not problem…going upward past that…some pain kicks in.
  • I can put my arm out to the side with no problem and lower it slowly with no problem or assistance.
-It hurts when I push against a wall (similar to a push up motion but against a wall).
  • I have basic mobility. It doesnt hurt to pick up things or just do basic things.
  • It does hurt when moving my arm inward (across my body).

My doctor is a family friend of mine so I texted him and he said to come in next week. Im just anxious and would like to know if anyone here experienced the same injury and if so…what type of injury is it? Recovery time? Serious?

I just hope and pray that its not my rotator cuff. Ive read that it takes MONTHS to recover and you cant do any upper body exercises for at least 6-8 weeks. This would suck big time. I hope its just a simple case of tendinitis or just some swelling/inflammation that can be healed with a week or two off.

Anyway, all advice and help is greatly appreciated. Thanks gentlemen.

I experienced a similar injury a couple of years ago. Just rest ur left shoulder for about four weeks. Worked for me…

Good luck!

Could be any number of things buddy, no point guessing, but MrSony’s advice is the best - rest it and let it have a chance to get better. Keep pushing it and you may find a more serious injury just around the corner.

Oh, and don’t worry (even though I do) I’ve never found worrying to be an effective medicine for anything.

good luck mate.

Thanks man.

Man 4 weeks…thats a bummer. Oh well…im not going to fuck around with my shoulder though. I dont want to mess up my rotator cuff.

By the way, what are some “upper body” workouts I can do since my shoulder is out of order? Ill probably be upping the cardio to maintain the fat loss but what can I do as far as lifting?

Thanks again.

You can’t do any upper body exercises without recruiting your shoulders. I would focus on lower body exercies and ramp up the cardio. Mate, I know its hard, but rest is often the best remedy. You don’t have rest for 4 weeks; evaluate your recovery on a weekly basis.
