I’ve recently been experiencing pain in both of my shoulder joints while doing pressing movements. It’s located more towards the rear as if my read delts were the area but it’s definitely the joints. I did front BB presses today after a good warm up and the discomfort in the stretch position was a bit alarming. It hurts less as the angle lowers (incline presses hurt less, bench presses less than that and decline presses don’t really hurt at all).
Could my rotator cuffs be irritated? I’ve never had any sot of RC issues before. Is it unusual to have RC issues in both shoulders? I was just wondering if anyone has experienced this and if so did anything to relieve it. I gave them a good rest because I had a cold but when I got back to training, they were still bugging me. Thanks!

BBB, want to write an article on posterior shoulder pain? I could use one right now
Did the indicator/stretch shown in the EFS link, but my internal rotation ROM seems to be fine even with retracted scapulae… External rotations and such certainly don’t help, they seem to make things worse… Which is why I thought the EFS thing should work. Damn.
I get the pain in the rear delt area especially when DB benching… It doesn’t linger for more than the length of my (chest) session though. Figure I’ll give chest pressing a rest for now and see if I can come up with some solution…
(pain goes away temporarily during the session whenever I round my shoulders)
This has only come up recently though… I wonder what set it off… I’m in a shoulder spec phase with very limited equipment, so maybe there’s a connection…
Damn body is too bloody complicated if you ask me.
C_C, I know very little, but I had some posterior shoulder tightness, I foam rolled my pec minor and lats, as well as upper back, and it eased off, I’m not sure what the cause was, BBB will probably have a far better and wordy insight though
i dislocated my left shoulder in 2007 and have experienced massive discomfort ever since. i actually chipped a small piece wen i put it back in place. there is now fluid that leaks into that compartment. it affected every area of my training and i basically plateaud because of the inability to increase the weight.
recently this year i did 3-4 weeks of 10-15 minutes on gymnast rings everyday including push ups and isometric holds at different positions of the push up (which i made out of pvc piping) i went back to weight training out of boredom and realized that the pain had disappeared. my incline dumbbell bench increased by 22 pounds along with increases in every other exercise.
during the 2-4 weeks of ring training i also did plenty of push up, chins and pull up variations everyday.
C C: I had the same pain. What a big pain in tha arse that is. I read a self-myofscial release book that said words to the effect of: You can’t stretch it and get proper length/tension relationships until you have released the trigger points affecting that area.
If you want, i’ve got a word file with relevant trigger point stuff, just doing tennis ball work on these areas has made ALL the difference. I can feel myself getting benefit and ROM out of the posterior capsule stretches now, after a few weeks. Anyone who has this issue, i’m at danielrat@hotmail.co.uk
I have a severe shoulder injury also. I can bench, db press, pushups, lat pull, and pullups fine. I can’t do anything fly movements however. It’s feels like my shoulder is going to dislocate. I plan on having the operation as soon as fall quarter is over next month.
Yesterday I worked chest the best I could and I’m very sore now. It feels great b/c I’ve only been focusing on lower body the last couple weeks. It’s heartbreaking I have to have the surgery and have to go through rehab again.
It really sucks I have to take a few steps backward before I take any further steps foward.
I’ve been to a physio after getting some pain in my left AC joint following a chest session. The conclusion she reached was that a weakness in my upper back has resulted in imbalance (quite common judging from some T-Nation research). Both AC joints were manipulated by the physio to encourage flexibility. Clearly I need to address these weaknesses before I can get back into proper action.
As an aside, I also had pretty bad pelvic tilt (I have had a history of lower back issues for some time and could actually notice myself corkscrewing during some lifts). Once this was realigned my back and core have never felt as strong. I would encourage anyone to consult a decent sports physio who specialises in osteopathy if you think this is an issue.

However, don’t go and ask a physio if they specialise in ‘osteopathy’, lol. They will look at you like WTF? probably, since ostos and physios are seperate professions.
But by all means ask a physio if they specialist in manipulation.

I should have qualified my earlier post. The physio practice in question claims to be unique in that they are led by osteopathic methods. Therefore, all patients undergo a head to foot realignment programme prior to any other specialist therapy for your specific ailment.
So I take your point, most physios will give you the WTF! So I’m fortunate mine isn’t like most and are dual-trained!
