Should I Try a Deadlift Meet?

Im 18 years old, weight 65kg, deadlift 155x5 on both sumo & conventional and still progressing. I do deadlifts with no special shoes or belts or suits, just gloves so if I competed and wore special equipment it would be higher? also because of weight classes, e.g. 6okg, and 67.5kg, would it be better if I am 60kg and still with same strength as ive been doing a lot of hypertrophy training mainly and doing strength on my deadlifts.

If I were you I’d ditch the gloves and get some chalk, then compete in the 67.5kg class.
5 kilos is a pretty significant percentage of weight to be dropping when you only weigh 65, you’d most likely lose quite a bit of strength.

Stick in the 67.5kg, and continue to put on a couple lbs of muscle. I also compete in that category in bench only (degenerative hip disease limits leg work) but most smaller guys like us don’t have 5-10 lbs we can drop easy without loosing strength like the bigger guys. I walk around at 7% bodyfat with a morning weigh in at 149 lbs. You would crush quite well with that pull. What are your squat and bench numbers? Why not do a full meet instead?

Squat is 120kg although my gyms squat rack are 2 single ones that you put together instead of a rack or cage and im starting kroks 12 week leg routine next week.

My bench isn’t so strong, 75kg x3

You should do a full meet. It would be a better experience for you.

is afull meet just squat, deadlift & bench? as lots of programs also have 5x5 or 3x5 etc for rows and overhead presses. If im training just for a meet do I still need to do stuff like pullups, rows, t bar rows, incline bench, etc. or just the 3 main excersises|

Yes, the answer is in your question; “Should I try”. I would recommend picking a stance and training that way only for now. Good luck and don’t over think it.

also difference between unequipped vs equipped? as in what would you wear for unequipped, just shoes, shirts and shorts with no belts etc

Look up the requirements for the organization. You will certainly need a singlet for all of them though. Check out NASA or USAPL. I compete with both.

BDFPA is near to me British Drugfree Powerlifting Association they have one in March £40 per lift plus £15 for 2nd and £5 for 3rd attned

also because of the gym flooring I deadlift with the bar ontop of 2 1 inch mats, how will this affect my deadlift when its from the floor? although when the weight is on the mat I does compress it so its less then 2 inches if you get what I mean

You should do a 3 lift as Ecchastang has suggested. If only for the fun of it.

You should find some BDFPA lifters to help you along, or find a forum that they have set up. I know that there are a couple of forums out there, where you could network some connections.

I would also suggest getting rid of the gloves and use chalk.

Using the mat is going to make a difference, so if possible pull off the floor to get used to the change.

Good luck in the future.

Because no one else has addressed it yet:

At the very least keep doing the pullups and rows. Those are included for reasons of balance and long-term health.

Go compete, but for goodness sake stop wearing gloves and STOP deadlifting off mats. If you need to have the mats there then stand on an equal number of mats so that you’re pulling from the correct height.

What belt is best for me to use/how do you know what belt is best for you?

And I cant use chalk in my gym but I will stop using gloves

Go as long as you can without chalk. If grip becomes a problem, throw on the gloves if they help, or better yet, buy a pair of lifting straps.

Belt choice is going to be personal preference/of no consequence. As long as it is uniformly 4" in width all the way around and either 10mm or 13mm thick leather, that’s the main thing. Lever belts are cool and easy to get tight and get back off assuming your weight/waist size doesn’t fluctuate a lot. They’re not really necessary though if you don’t want to fool with it. Single prong or double prong, doesn’t really matter.

I will say, as a matter of preference, I prefer my 10mm belt on deadlifts. On bench and squat it doesn’t make much difference to me whether I’m using a 13mm or 10mm. Realistically speaking these decisions aren’t going to make an appreciable difference in your or my numbers, so I’d just pick something and go with it.

You need to learn how to be sneaky and to use chalk only when you need to. I’ve used chalk in plenty of gyms where its banned, but I am not obvious about it and I don’t leave a mess.

If your gym doesn’t allow chalk (mine doesn’t either) this is a pretty good alternative.
